Why Allow Children To Be Independent

It is now a universally accepted fact that independent children are much better that the ones who are spoon-fed by their parents. As parents, we have this innate tendency to protect out kids from anything and everything. We want to protect our children from all the evils in the world. But it is not so easy. You cannot protect your children from the harsh reality forever. That is why, it is better to allow your children to be independent.

The best part is that, children want to be independent these days. They want to be free from their parent's guidance and constant interference. That is why, parenting kids has become so difficult in our modern times. But you can turn the rebellion of your teenage kids to your advantage. Let them know that they are completely free and thus, responsible for their own actions. This is the best way to make your children independent and responsible.

Children To Be Independent

Stop Protecting Your Kids

You don't want your kids to go out at night or go on their own to school because you want to protect them. But for parenting independent kids, you will have to curb your protective instincts. Allow your kids to use public transport and let them venture out at their own risk.

Let Them See The Harsh Reality

We don't want to discuss harsh realities of life like rape, AIDS, prostitution, porn rackets etc. for the fear that our kids will lose their innocence. But your kids cannot remain innocent forever. Allow them to see news relating to these topics so that they know what is happening in the world.

Give Them Money To Do Something

Give your children enough money to start something of their own. But don't give them so much money that they become complacent. You must make sure that they don't starve but have to work hard to move up in life.

Let Them Make Mistakes

Don't get psyched out if your kid gets fined for rash driving or fails the exams. Independence has to be absolute. Just make sure you take sufficient punitive actions for it. If your kid fails in the exam, slash his/her pocket money. If they drink and drive, they don't get to touch the car. Punishment should be relevant and hurt at the right place.

Encourage Them To have Their own Opinions

Your kids opinions may match a bit with yours but it is important for them to have opinions. Encourage them to speak out and argue their points with you. Debate is always healthy.

These are the reasons why you should allow your kids to be independent. Do you think you are raising your kids to be independent?
