Beyond Traditional Venues: How Leisure Destinations Are Changing Festival Celebrations
Navratri 2026 brought people together for dandiya nights and festive outings, while Dussehra offered another reason to celebrate with family and friends. With Diwali approaching, many are planning how to make the most of the festive break. Alongside celebrations at home and traditional events, theme parks, entertainment hubs and leisure destinations are offering alternatives that bring recreation, dining and entertainment together.
Shreya Malpani, Director of Malpani Group, explains how changing travel and leisure preferences are creating new possibilities for festive celebrations and India's tourism industry.
How Festival Celebrations Are Moving Beyond Traditional Venues
In India, festivals have always been about togetherness. Whether it is Diwali, Navratri, Christmas or New Year, these occasions bring families and friends closer. What is changing is how people choose to celebrate. Alongside gatherings at home and traditional event venues, there is growing interest in destinations that offer entertainment, convenience and meaningful time spent together.
This reflects a broader shift in travel and leisure preferences. A celebration is increasingly valued not only for the occasion itself, but also for the experience it offers. A day out or a short getaway allows families to step away from familiar routines and enjoy a different setting without committing to an extended holiday.
From Venues To Experiences
The shift is no longer simply about finding a place to celebrate; it is about choosing an experience worth sharing. Visitors are looking for more than a single activity or event. They value destinations where the attractions, atmosphere, food and entertainment come together to make the entire outing feel special.
For the leisure and entertainment industry, this calls for a more thoughtful approach to festive programming. It is not enough to add decorations or host a one-off event. The opportunity lies in creating an experience that feels relevant to the occasion while remaining true to what makes each destination unique.
Theme parks, water parks and integrated leisure destinations are well placed to respond to this demand. By bringing different forms of recreation and entertainment into one setting, they can turn a festive gathering into a shared experience that extends well beyond a conventional celebration.
The Appeal Of Family-Friendly Destinations
One of the biggest considerations is that families rarely have identical interests. Children may look forward to rides and interactive attractions, while adults may prefer live entertainment, dining or simply the chance to unwind. A successful family destination offers enough variety for different age groups without losing the sense of being together.
Convenience matters just as much. When activities, entertainment and dining are available in one place, families can spend less time coordinating plans and more time enjoying the occasion. The value is not only in the number of things to do, but in how easily people can enjoy them together.
Short getaways are also becoming an appealing way to make the most of festive holidays and long weekends. Destinations within driving distance of major cities have an opportunity to offer that sense of escape without requiring families to plan an extended vacation.
Creating Festive Experiences Beyond The Calendar
With Navratri and Dussehra having recently passed and Diwali around the corner, festive travel and leisure destinations have opportunities to attract visitors through seasonal experiences. However, the appeal of these destinations need not be limited to major festivals. Weekends, school holidays and other occasions throughout the year can also encourage families to plan outings together.
Malpani remarked that the larger opportunity for operators is to build experiences that create reasons to visit, and to return, throughout the year. Seasonal décor, themed entertainment and special events can bring a festival to life, but they should add to the destination's overall appeal rather than become its only attraction.
This also creates an opportunity for domestic tourism. When leisure destinations give people a compelling reason to travel closer to home, the benefits can extend to the surrounding hospitality and local tourism ecosystem.
At the same time, the fundamentals cannot be overlooked. Safety, service quality, accessibility and value for money are what turn an enjoyable visit into lasting trust. A festive attraction may bring someone through the gates for the first time, but the quality of the overall experience is what gives them a reason to return.
A New Chapter For Festive Tourism
As consumer expectations evolve, festivals offer India's tourism and leisure industry an opportunity to think beyond conventional celebration formats. The focus should not be on replacing familiar traditions, but on creating new ways for people to experience them together.
The essence of a festival remains unchanged: connection, joy and shared memories. What is evolving is where and how those moments are created. For leisure destinations, the opportunity lies in offering experiences that complement established traditions while giving families more reasons to explore, celebrate and return throughout the year.
