Tom Cruise Lands AFI’s 52nd Life Achievement Award After Honorary Oscar
Barely a fortnight after walking the red carpet in Tokyo for his latest film, Digger, Tom Cruise has been handed another milestone. The American Film Institute (AFI) announced on 21 October that he will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, with a gala tribute at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, 24 April 2027.
The Tom Cruise AFI Life Achievement Award is billed as the highest honour for a career in film. For Cruise, 64, it follows an honorary Oscar in November 2025, a recognition that arrived after four Academy Award nominations and no competitive win.
A Global Icon, In The Institute's Words
AFI Board of Trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy called Cruise a global icon. She praised his commitment as both actor and producer, and his belief in the power of movies to bring people together. She also described him as an ambassador for American film around the world, according to AFI's announcement. Proceeds from the gala will support AFI's arts and education initiatives.
From Risky Business To Maverick
Cruise's rise began in the 1980s with Risky Business and the original Top Gun, and it has rarely slowed since. Three of his four Oscar nominations were for acting, for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. The fourth came for producing Top Gun: Maverick. In between came the Mission: Impossible franchise, built around stunts he often performs himself, and two films with Steven Spielberg, Minority Report and War of the Worlds.
Forty-Five Years, Nearly $13 Billion
Over a 45-year career, Cruise's films have collectively grossed nearly $13 billion worldwide, according to Parade, making him one of the highest-grossing actors in history. He has previously received career honours from the Cannes Film Festival, the American Cinema Awards and the Producers Guild of America.
A Season Of Tributes
The AFI honour arrives less than a year after the Academy's Governors Awards, where Cruise received his honorary Oscar before an audience that included Steven Spielberg. Director Alejandro G Iñárritu, who presented the award, said Cruise's gift lay less in how far he runs or jumps than in the precision of how he moves.
Cruise, in his own speech, spoke of how cinema made the world feel larger when he was a child, and promised to keep supporting the art form. It is a theme that has defined his public image. He is among the loudest champions of watching films in theatres rather than on streaming.
Joining A Club Of Hollywood Greats
Since John Ford became the first recipient in 1973, the award has gone to a single person each year. The roll call includes Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep and, most recently, Francis Ford Coppola in 2025. Eddie Murphy was honoured this April, in a celebration that aired as a Netflix special.
The honour was once reserved for careers that had long been settled. The trustees later amended that rule to include artists still at work, and Hanks became the youngest recipient at 46 in 2002. They still ask that a recipient's talent has fundamentally advanced the art of film, has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, peers and the public, and has stood the test of time.
What Happens On 24 April
The tribute will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, 24 April 2027.
The honour lands at an unusual moment. Cruise is still making films, still travelling to premieres, and now collecting the industry's biggest career tributes one after another. On 24 April, the AFI will look back over 45 years of work. The man at the centre of it is still very much in motion.
