H3N2 Prevention Tips For Kids This Summer
It is of concern to the Centre that Covid-19 cases are creeping up once again in light of recent concerns about a new strain of the H3N2 virus that is lasting longer and causing more severe symptoms.
Despite the fact that experts recommend not panicking over the spread of the non-human influenza virus, precautions must be taken. Cases have been reported throughout the country as testing intensifies.

In addition to pregnant women, children under 15 years of age, and elderly individuals over 50 years of age, people with underlying medical conditions are at an increased risk of complications related to H3N2 influenza [1].
In recent days, there has been a disturbing rise in cases of H3N2 among children, especially those younger than five. Infants and preschoolers have also been admitted to intensive care units in Delhi and Pune.
There is an increased risk of children contracting the flu during the summer holidays since schools are closed and summer vacations have begun [2].
Here are some tips on how you can protect your child against the influenza virus.
H3N2 Prevention Tips For Kids This Summer
- Encourage them to wash their hands frequently with soap and water.
- Take precautions by wearing a mask.
- Do not allow your child to touch their mouth or nose.
- Teach them how to shield their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
- In children, asthma and other co-morbid illnesses such as obesity, lung disease, neurological problems, and heart disease are at an increased risk. Therefore, parents must be extra vigilant.

Importance Of Hydration Amidst An H3N2 Summer
Maintain hydration and drink plenty of fluids. You can do this by purchasing a water bottle that indicates how much water your child is drinking, encouraging them to consume more fluids. Because in summer, dehydration can be a huge problem [3].
Dehydration can cause a range of symptoms, from fatigue, confusion and headaches, to muscle cramps, feeling light-headed and in extreme cases, seizures and coma. By encouraging your child to drink more water, you can help reduce the risk of dehydration and its associated symptoms [4].
Things To Keep In Mind While Your Kids Play Outside, Amidst H3N2
If your kid wishes to play outside with friends, make sure guardians are present to keep an eye out for them. Not only will this help to stop the spread of the virus, but it can also help to reduce the risk of infection of H3N2.
Wearing a mask will help to reduce the number of droplets that can be spread through the air and having a guardian present can help to make sure that the children are playing in a safe environment [5].
If your child has had a persistent cough for more than a week, you should consult a physician. Do not overuse over-the-counter medications for cough in children younger than six years of age.
The experts recommended getting adequate rest, increasing fluid intake, and incorporating micro-nutrients into children's diets to help them combat the illness. It is important for parents to use fever medicines judiciously, not overuse them as they may adversely affect kidney function, and sponging with tepid water when the child is feverish.

On A Final Note...
As well as teaching your child the appropriate safety habits, it is imperative that you check with other parents to ensure that the kids are following the necessary safety precautions during the H3N2 surge.
