Throwback Thursday: Before The Headlines, Govinda Was Every 90s Kid’s Favourite Bollywood Entertainer
Govinda is back in the headlines, but not for the songs, dance moves or comedy that once made him a favourite with Bollywood audiences. Actress Divya Khosla recently spoke about the ongoing controversy surrounding Govinda, Sunita Ahuja and his 'Roopa' co-star Komal Rani, while also recalling how much she enjoyed watching Govinda's films growing up in the 1990s.
That mention of the 90s brings back a very different Govinda. For many who grew up during that decade, Chi-Chi, as Govinda is fondly known, was the Bollywood star who could make you laugh, dance and repeat his dialogues long after the film ended. So, on this Throwback Thursday, here's a look back at the era that made Govinda every 90s kid's favourite Bollywood entertainer.
Why Govinda Made 90s Comedy Look Effortless
Govinda's 90s films had a formula audiences knew would work: comedy, romance, songs and plenty of chaos. Films such as 'Raja Babu', 'Coolie No. 1', 'Saajan Chale Sasural', 'Hero No. 1', 'Dulhe Raja' and 'Haseena Maan Jaayegi' became part of the decade's popular comedy culture.
Govinda's collaborations with director David Dhawan were particularly significant, resulting in several of his best-known comedy films. And if you grew up watching Govinda's movies on television, chances are you still remember at least one scene or dialogue by heart.
Govinda Was Also A Dance Favourite
Govinda wasn't just delivering punchlines. He was dancing through them. His energetic movements, expressive face and distinctive style became as recognisable as his acting. Songs such as 'Husn Hai Suhana' and 'UP Wala Thumka' remain closely associated with Govinda's 90s image.
Govinda also had a way of making flamboyant fashion feel completely natural. Bright shirts, colourful trousers, sunglasses and exaggerated outfits became part of the Govinda package. Today, some of those looks may seem wonderfully over-the-top, but that was part of what made Govinda instantly recognisable.
Govinda And Karisma Kapoor Were A 90s Favourite
Govinda and Karisma Kapoor became one of the most recognisable on-screen pairs of the decade. Their films together included 'Raja Babu', 'Coolie No. 1', 'Saajan Chale Sasural' and 'Hero No. 1', among others.
Their chemistry added another layer to Govinda's appeal. The combination of comedy, romance, dance and chaos made their films particularly memorable for audiences who grew up with 90s Bollywood.
Why We Still Remember Govinda
Govinda's films didn't ask audiences to take everything seriously. They offered colourful characters, catchy songs, ridiculous situations and a star who was completely comfortable being funny.
That is perhaps why the current headlines feel so different from the Govinda many 90s kids remember. Before conversations about his personal life brought him back into the spotlight, Govinda was the star whose films gave an entire generation something simple to look forward to: a good laugh, a great song and a reason to get up and dance.
