Rashmika Mandanna To Play M.S. Subbulakshmi: First Look To Be Unveiled On Singer’s 110th Birth Anniversary
September 16 marks the 110th birth anniversary of legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi. The occasion also marks a significant beginning for her upcoming biopic, with Rashmika Mandanna set to portray the celebrated singer on screen. The film's official title and first look are scheduled to be unveiled today at 5:15 PM, giving audiences their first detailed glimpse of the project.
Rashmika Mandanna Steps Into M.S. Subbulakshmi's Role
Rashmika confirmed the biopic on September 15 by sharing a poster featuring her as M.S. Subbulakshmi. In the image, she appears in a traditional saree and jewellery, with her hand placed on a veena. She described the opportunity as an "absolute honour" in her announcement.
The film is being directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for the Nani starrer 'Jersey' and 'Kingdom', while Anirudh Ravichander has been brought on board to compose the music. The project is backed by Geetha Arts, along with Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vas Works.
Sai Pallavi Was Earlier Linked To The Role
Rashmika's casting comes after earlier reports connecting other actresses with the ambitious project. Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth were previously linked to the film during its early pre-production stage. A report in August said Rashmika had subsequently emerged as the frontrunner, with discussions then underway.
However, those earlier casting reports were not official confirmations. Rashmika is now the confirmed lead, with the makers formally announcing her involvement ahead of the film's launch.
Remembering M.S. Subbulakshmi On Her 110th Birth Anniversary
Born in Madurai on September 16, 1916, M.S. Subbulakshmi became one of India's most celebrated Carnatic vocalists. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1998 and made history with her performance at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. Her recordings and devotional music have remained an enduring part of India's musical heritage.
The biopic's launch on her 110th birth anniversary adds particular significance to the project. Kamal Haasan is scheduled to attend the Chennai launch as chief guest, while the title and first look will be revealed at 5:15 PM.
