Teddy Day 2023: The Origin Story Of The Beloved Teddy Bear
As part of Valentine's Week celebrations, 10 February is known as Teddy Day. On this day, people gift their loved ones stuffed toys in the shape of teddy bears. Teddy bears represent love, warmth, and care.
Having said that, what is the whole story behind the Teddy Bear? I find it to be an intriguing one.

Did you know that the Teddy Bear was invented to honour President Theodore Roosevelt? It began when Theodore Roosevelt was on a bear hunting trip near Onward, Mississippi on November 14, 1902.
Teddy Bears: Who Invented Them?
Originally designed by Morris Michtom and Richard Steiff under his aunt Margarete Steiff's company in Germany in the early 20th century, the teddy bear, named after President Theodore Roosevelt, has become a popular children's toy. The story, song, and film have celebrated it.
The Origin Story Of The Teddy Bear: Why President Theodore Roosevelt?
President Theodore Roosevelt Jr., often known as Teddy or by his initials, T. R., was an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, naturalist, historian, and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909.
As the stody goes -a black bear was cornered and tied to a willow tree by Roosevelt's assistants, led by Holt Collier, a born slave and a former cavalryman.
This event quickly spread across the country through newspaper articles as Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear. They summoned Roosevelt and suggested that he shoot the bear. Roosevelt viewed this as extremely unsportsmanlike, and refused to shoot the bear.

A political cartoonist, Clifforfford Berryman, read the article and satirised the president's refusal to kill the bear in a lighthearted fashion.
As a result of Berryman's cartoon, Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn candy shop owner, had an idea based upon the cartoon. A stuffed animal was also made by him and his wife Rose, and Michtom decided to dedicate the bear to the president who refused to shoot a bear by creating a stuffed toy bear.
Teddy's Bear is what he called it.
When Michtom received Roosevelt's permission to use his name, he began mass producing the toy bears, which were so popular that he founded the Ideal Toy Company shortly thereafter.
Despite the fact that the Teddy Bear has achieved worldwide popularity for many decades, its origin can be traced back to Theodore's fateful hunting trip in 1902.

What is the significance of Teddy Bears as Valentine's Day gifts?
Teddy bears are a popular Valentine's Day gift, since they are symbols of love and affection, comfort and security, timeless, versatile, and can be enjoyed for many years to come.
