Kannada Film ‘Lambodhara 2.0’ To Feature Real Humanoid Robot JIA, Director Calls It A First For Indian Cinema

If you think robots in films usually mean human actors stepping into robotic roles, Lambodhara 2.0 is taking a very different route. From Rajinikanth's Chitti in 'Enthiran' and '2.0' to Shah Rukh Khan's robotic character in 'Ra.One', audiences have often seen human actors bring robots to life on screen. Now, the upcoming Kannada science-fiction social thriller 'Lambodhara 2.0' is going a step further by featuring JIA, a real humanoid robot, as an on-screen character. Director Simple Suni and the makers have described it as the first time a real humanoid robot has played a character in Indian cinema.

Directed by Simple Suni, Lambodhara 2.0 stars Anil Shetty, Saachi Bindra, Kunal Kapoor and Meghana Gaonkar. The film has now completed shooting and is heading into post-production. A theatrical release has been announced, but the makers have not yet revealed an exact release date.

What makes the film stand out is JIA, a humanoid robot developed by Bengaluru-based Machani Robotics. According to the filmmakers, JIA is not a CGI character or a human actor dressed as a robot. The physical robot was present as part of the film's cast and performs in scenes alongside the human actors.

Director Says JIA Has A Full-Fledged Role

JIA is not being used simply as a futuristic prop. The director has said that the robot's character appears throughout the film. Reports from Kannada media also quote Suni explaining that the team gave JIA prompts to make it perform according to the requirements of different scenes. The makers have called this the first time in Indian cinema that a real humanoid robot plays a character on screen.

What Is 'Lambodhara 2.0' About?

The film combines science fiction with a social-thriller storyline. Set against Bengaluru, it explores the way technology is changing everyday life, particularly for younger people.

Its themes include social-media pressure, digital addiction, loneliness, online validation, surveillance and the search for happiness in a virtual world. The story also examines the increasingly blurred line between real experiences and digital life.

The casting adds another layer to that premise. While the film talks about technology's influence on people, an actual humanoid robot is simultaneously becoming part of the storytelling itself.

Kunal Kapoor Makes His Kannada Debut

The project also marks Kunal Kapoor's Kannada cinema debut. He joins Anil Shetty, who makes his acting debut, along with Saachi Bindra and Meghana Gaonkar.

With filming complete, 'Lambodhara 2.0' now moves closer to its theatrical release. Whether JIA's presence becomes a novelty or an integral part of the story will only become clear when audiences see the finished film. For now, the idea of a real humanoid robot sharing the screen with human actors gives this Kannada sci-fi thriller a distinctly unusual starting point.
