The World Spine Day is an annual healthcare event observed on 16 October to promote the importance of spine health and to educate people about the seriousness of spinal health, one of the major causes of disability worldwide.
The purpose of World Spine Day is to increase public awareness of the current spine disorders, their impact on one's health, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and preventative measures that can be taken to ensure a healthy and happy lifestyle.

MOVE YOUR SPINE is the theme for World Spine Day 2023. The campaign encourages people to stay active in order to maintain the health of their spines.
Don't Do These 5 Things, It May Crack Your Spine
According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting over 540 million people at any given time. Yes, you read that right! However many spine-related issues are preventable.

1. Slouching
Did you know that slouching can exert up to 200% more pressure on your spine than standing or sitting up straight? A study in the American Journal of Pain Management found that poor posture, especially when sitting for extended periods, can lead to chronic back pain.
So, make sure to maintain good posture while working at your desk or binge-watching your favourite series.

2. Overloading your backpack
We get it - that heavy backpack might seem like a mini treasure chest. However, carrying a backpack that's too heavy can harm your spine, causing long-term issues.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests that the weight of your backpack should be no more than 10-15% of your body weight. Anything heavier, and your spine may start to protest.

3. Neglecting exercise
A sedentary lifestyle can lead to a host of spine-related problems. A study in the Journal of Spine Research noted that regular exercise helps improve spine flexibility, strength, and overall health. So, don't skip those workouts; your spine will thank you for it!
4. Smartphone
We all love our smartphones, but bending your neck to stare at that screen can be detrimental to your spine.
Research published in Surgical Technology International suggests that the angle of your neck while looking at your phone can place an extra 60 pounds of pressure on your spine! Try holding your device at eye level to reduce strain.

5. Ignoring the ergonomics
Many of us spend hours at a desk or in front of a computer. Ignoring ergonomic principles, such as the height of your chair, screen, or keyboard, can wreak havoc on your spine.
A study in the Journal of Occupational Health found that proper ergonomics reduces the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. So, invest some time in creating an ergonomic workspace.
