What Virat Kohli's 15,000 ODI Runs Reveal About Staying Fit After 35

Virat Kohli began the first ODI against West Indies on September 27 needing 59 runs to reach 15,000. He got there in 303 innings, the fastest to do so, compared with Sachin Tendulkar's 377. At 37, Virat Kohli's fitness is as much a part of the story as his batting. He needed only 16 innings to go from 14,000 to 15,000, at a strike rate of 107.93, the highest of any 1,000-run block in his career. Four habits stand out.

Lesson One: Protect The Fitness Session First

In a 2020 video call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kohli said he could live with missing practice but would "feel bad if I miss my fitness session". He also said mental strength has to be supported by physical fitness.

Try this: Fix your workout slots for the week before anything else goes into the calendar. The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening work on two or more days.

Lesson Two: Let Food Serve Recovery

Kohli did not always eat this way. He has said he was not a vegetarian until 2018, when a cervical spine problem during India's tour of South Africa pushed him to change his diet. He said the switch made recovery between matches quicker, and wrote on social media that he had "never felt better in my life".

He has also clarified that he is vegetarian, not vegan. In a 2021 fan Q&A, he described a plate of vegetables, some eggs, dal, quinoa, spinach and dosas.

Try this: Judge food by how you recover, not by what is trending. Kohli's plate is a personal choice, and a dietitian can build one around your own needs.

Lesson Three: Let The Calendar Breathe

Kohli has retired from Tests and T20 internationals. Back for this year's IPL, he said the breaks in his schedule keep him "fresh and excited", and that burnout, not being undercooked, was always the risk. In 2020, he had also credited a good sleep cycle, along with diet and fitness, for how well the team recovers.

Try this: Build lighter days and weeks into your plan, and protect your sleep, before your body forces the issue.

Lesson Four: Adjust The Training As The Body Ages

Kohli has spoken of disc problems dating back to 2011. Ramji Srinivasan, a trainer who has worked with the Indian team, told the Deccan Chronicle in 2022 that Kohli needed to train smart rather than train hard. Leading strength and conditioning specialist Deckline Leitão said ageing sportspersons should focus on recovery and avoid overtraining, adding that "peaking at the right time for competition is the key".

Try this: Raise your load gradually, and ease off when the body pushes back. Anyone with a health condition or an old injury should check with a doctor before changing a routine.

Bottomline

Kohli's 15,000 runs did not arrive in one grand innings. They came one session at a time, across 18 years of ODI cricket. The transferable lesson is not to train like an international cricketer, but to turn up like one, and to rest like one too.
