What Is Vaginal Atrophy & What Causes It?
This condition makes the skin around the private parts dry and thin. The elasticity of the tissues decreases and this causes discomfort. Read on to know about the causes.
With age, many changes occur and one of them is vaginal atrophy in women. What exactly is it? This condition makes the skin around the private parts dry and thin.
The elasticity of the tissues decreases and this causes discomfort. In fact, it can also cause bladder issues and discomfort in the privates.
Intercourse may result in pain and irritation. The skin down there may become dry and may lose elasticity. In fact, vaginal infection could also cause urinary tract infections and chronic vaginal infections too. But what causes it? Let us take a look.

Menopause
Low levels of estrogen levels may cause vaginal atrophy. Commonly, estrogen dips after menopause which occurs between 40-55 years old. That is when the monthly cycles stop and estrogen levels dip resulting in vaginal atrophy.

Cancer Treatments
Chemotherapy, pelvic radiation or treatments that suppress estrogen may cause vaginal atrophy.

Perimenopause
Even perimenopause can cause a dip in estrogen levels. That is why in some women, vaginal atrophy occurs during perimenopause.

Surgical Menopause
Even surgical menopause may cause vaginal atrophy. In some cases, where ovaries are surgically removed (due to diseases or treatment for some other health issues), estrogen levels may dip.

Other Medications
Some medications also take a toll on estrogen levels and thereby cause vaginal atrophy. If you are using medication for fibroids or endometriosis, then check your estrogen levels as they are likely to dip.

Breastfeeding
Even lactating mothers may experience vaginal atrophy due to decreased levels of estrogen. But after sometime, when the estrogen levels pick up again, the problem gets solved.

Tip
Some studies claim that women who participate in regular intercourse can prevent vaginal atrophy even if their estrogen levels dip.

Treatment
Usage of lubricants, working out regularly and maintaining an active sex life can help if the symptoms are mild. But otherwise, hormonal replacement therapy may be an option.
