If you are someone who has been experiencing acidity or heartburns on a regular basis, it is time to make yourself aware of some of the surprising, yet common, things that can make acidity worse!
Acidity is a digestive ailment which is commonly seen in many people; however, when they experience acidity or heartburn on a regular basis, it can become a problem!
Also known as acid reflux, acidity can be described as a condition in which there is excess of stomach acid produced in the stomach. And it travels upwards along the food pipe, irritating the entire digestive tract.
Some of the most common causes for acid reflux are unhealthy eating habits, certain digestive disorders, obesity, taking certain medications, etc.
Acidity comprises of these common symptoms such as abdominal pain, burning sensation in the chest area, nausea, vomiting, belching, bitter taste in the mouth, etc.
Many a times, people tend to associate acidity with its most common causes as mentioned earlier.
However, there are certain other things that can make acid reflux worse, to know what they are, have a look below.
1. Coffee

A research study has found that drinking coffee early in the morning, especially on an empty stomach, can make your acidity much worse!
2. Alcohol

One of the causes for elevation in acid reflux can be alcohol. Even if you are not a regular drinker, a night of excessive drinking can give you a bad heartburn the next day!
3. Chewing Gum

A recent study has claimed that people who are in the habit of chewing gum, especially if it is peppermint flavoured, can suffer from an increased stomach acid level, worsening the acid reflux condition.
4. Late-Night Snacking

Another cause for acidity is binge-eating on unhealthy snacks, late at night, just before bed because when you lie down flat, the food travels backwards towards your oesophagus, causing acidity.
5. Eating Too Fast

Some of us tend to eat way too quickly when we are in a hurry, this habit can cause an imbalance in the stomach acid levels, causing acid reflux.
6. Smoking

Smoking is yet another habit that makes acidity worse, the soot and smoke from the cigarette enters your digestive system directly and causes the acid levels to increase!
7. Fish

Another cause for acid reflux can be consuming fish or fish oil supplements on a regular basis, as this habit can trigger the problem of acid reflux in some people.
