How Menstruation Messes With Sleep And Ways To Fix It
During menstruation, some women find it difficult to sleep. This article talks about the causes and offers some tips on how to handle this issue.
When a woman has periods, she suffers from a number of health issues. These issues differ from women to women. These end up making life miserable for some women and also affect their sleep patterns. Some women find it difficult to sleep during this time because of the symptoms associated with menstruation.

When a woman has periods, she might experience mood swings or become anxious or frustrated. Irritability or decreased concentration can also occur. Psychological symptoms also contribute to specific behaviours, like aggression or withdrawal from regular social interaction with people one is close to.

Physical symptoms might also occur and might vary considerably in severity. Breast tenderness, bloating and fat gain are common. Increased pain and specific hormonal changes might lead to breast tenderness, abdomen cramps, backaches, complications, migraines and joint or muscle pain. Fatigue and decreased sexual desire is also seen.
All these make life difficult for some women and make it difficult for them to sleep well. The fluctuating levels of oestrogen and progesterone and loss of blood interferes with the normal functioning of the body and ends up with messing with your sleep patterns.

Here are some ways in which you can get proper sleep during menstruation. Drink plenty of water during menstruation. This will help to flush out water from your body and prevent bloating. This will lessen your discomfort and help you to fall asleep.

Take plenty of calcium in the form of dairy, nuts and legumes. Calcium has been found by researchers to have sedating properties and hence helps to improve sleep quality. Nuts have been found to have magnesium which is a muscle relaxant. Consuming a handful of these will help you to fall asleep.
Take multivitamins with B6. This will help to generate serotonin which will help you to fall asleep. Exercising in the morning will produce positive effects on your body and help you to fall asleep. Also stay away from caffeine and alcohol. These dehydrate the body and cause difficulty in sleeping.
