Hidden Dangers: Why Soy Is So Unhealthy!

By Padmapreetham Mahalingam

It is usually touted to be a healthy food; however in reality, soy isn’t that healthy. In the beginning, most studies focussed only on the nutritional value of soya. It was said to be protein-rich and low on calories. Nevertheless, soy is neither a super healthy food nor a hormone disturbing poison.

For decades, soy was marketed as a miracle food, a protein-rich legume better than consuming meat. The result was that excellent things were said about soy that people deluged their diet with it.

However, on the flip side, there is substantial evidence that soy can have the same harmful components that other beans do. There have been modified findings that soy causes allergies and reduces fertility in women.

It is proven that soy isoflavones (type of phytoestrogen) can hamper the endocrine system and cause hormone imbalance. Some of the scientific data suggests soya isn’t a healthy part of anybody’s diet. Here are some of the glaring problems associated with soy.

Hidden Dangers: Why Soy Is So Unhealthy!

Soy has Phytoestrogens
One of the destructive properties of soya includes phytoestrogens. Soy beans are loaded with hormone-like substances — phytoestrogens —and the chemical structure of it are analogous to that of the body’s natural estrogen hormones (human sex hormone estrogen). Studies have shown that for men, it can lead to a testosterone imbalance and infertility. For women, it can cause an increase in enzymatic activity that can lead to breast cancer.

On the other hand, an infant consuming soya is a stack equivalent of 4 birth control pills a day. Moreover, it accelerates puberty in young girls around the age of 6 or 7.

Soy has Goitrogens
In some cases, soya has proven to create the risk of destroying your thyroid. Some foods cause thyroid suppression ( goitrogens) and soya is highly loaded with it. Goitrogens are substances that try to prevent the synthesis of thyroid hormones and hinder iodine metabolism. It also interferes with the thyroid function.

Soy contains Phytates
Soybeans are high in phytic acid. The phytates is connected to metal ions which thwart the absorption of essential minerals required by the body. Some of these minerals are zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. The elevated level of phytates in soya suspends the body’s ability to absorb important minerals.

Soy has Hemagglutinin
Soy also contains Hemagglutinin. It is a clot-promoting substance that actually brings the red blood cell closer together.

Hidden Dangers: Why Soy Is So Unhealthy!

Soy is rich in Trypsin inhibitor
Soya has trypsin inhibitor, a negative substance that impedes the digestion of protein, which could injure the pancreas and even lead to pancreatic cancer. Too much trypsin, can also cause a lot of digestive problems such as diarrhoea, bleeding and cramps.

Soy is toxic
Soy has a large amount of manganese in it. When compared to breast milk, soy has nearly about 80 percent manganese stored in it. Studies have found that soybeans are processed in aluminium tanks and this makes it soak up higher levels of the substance.

Moreover soy foods also include anti-nutritional factors like protease inhibitors, soyatoxin, oxalates, and estrogens. These are also some of the factors that can cause harm to the digestive protein. And soy foods like Tofu and protein products cause clumping in the intestine as these foods do not dissolve easily in the digestive system.
