Indigestion is a common problem faced by many of us these days. The common belief that indigestion can occur only due to excessive eating is not true. There can be many causes for indigestion other than overeating.
Frequent indigestion causes discomfort in the digestive track also known as dyspepsia. There is a feeling of fullness, nausea and vomiting due to indigestion.

So what exactly causes indigestion? Our day to day habits can cause daily indigestion. Some foods can also cause indigestion and so it is best to avoid them. Knowing the causes of indigestion might help you to get rid of it.

Poor Eating Habits
There are some unhealthy eating habits such as eating your food fast, now chewing food properly, having heavy meals, eating spicy and oily foods that lead to indigestion. These are some of the main reasons for indigestion.

Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol dehydrates your body cells thus completely damaging them. This will eventually lead to indigestion. Limit your alcohol consumption to prevent indigestion.

Smoking
Smoking stops the activity of your digestive enzymes causing indigestion. Since your digestive enzymes are not working properly, the food you eat does not get digested. P Smoking also kills you appetite and makes you feel full.

Caffeine
Coffee, tea, chocolate and soft drinks contain caffeine which leads to indigestion. Caffeine also causes more acidity, bloating and cramps. Limit your coffee and all sort of caffeine intake to prevent indigestion.

Exercise After Meals
There should be a gap of atleast an hour between meals and exercise. After having food the blood flow towards the stomach increases to aid in digestion. However, during exercise the blood flow to stomach decreases leading to indigestion.

Medications
Some medications such as for hypertension (high blood pressure), iron supplements, antibiotics pain killers, and anti-inflammatory drugs can retard the process of digestion. Once these medications are stopped, the normal digestion process will resume. But unfortunately some of these medications such as drugs for high blood pressure are to be taken life long.

Obesity
Being overweight causes indigestion as the excess body weight puts pressure on the digestive track. This causes the stomach acid to move upwards towards the food pipe (esophagus). So you need to control your weight in order to prevent indigestion.

Stress
Stress is an underlying cause of indigestion in most of the cases. Stress decreases blood flow to the stomach which is necessary for digestion. It will also decreases the secretion of digestive enzymes in the stomach and intestines leading to indigestion.

Hernias
It is a medical condition in which any of the abdominal organs gets displaced from it's original position and protrudes out of the abdominal walls. This leads to indigestion and acid reflux.

Bacterial Infections
A common bacteria (helicobacter pylori) that invades stomach is a major cause of indigestion. You need to visit a doctor and have antibiotic treatment for the infection. In some cases this bacteria can also cause stomach ulcers.

Stomach Ulcers
They are painful sores or lesions that develops in the inner walls of stomach and intestines. They are caused by excessive acid and pepsin in stomach. One of the symptoms of stomach ulcers is indigestion. Once the stomach ulcers are treated, indigestion will automatically subside.
