Brown seaweed is richer in vitamin B and calcium than many vegetables, including kale and collard greens. Brown seaweed is rich in antioxidant supplements like vitamin C and nutrients like manganese and zinc that help to fight oxidative stress and are useful in cardiovascular health. Brown seaweed also has possible fat-blocking properties. Since it contains a natural fibre called alginate, reports suggest that it might prevent the assimilation of fat in the gut.

Brown seaweed has been found to combat chronic illnesses, including cancer. Researchers found that it may prevent the spread of colon and breast cancers. A substance present in brown seaweed called fucoidan can also prevent the spread of cancer of the lung and cancer of the prostate.

According to latest research, brown seaweed also helps to fight diabetes mellitus. Studies also suggest that brown seaweed might aid glycemic control and reduce blood sugar levels, benefitting people with type 2 diabetes.

Brown seaweed has also been found to fight obesity. A study on brown seaweed found that a substance in the chloroplasts of brown seaweed called fucoxanthin might promote weight reduction in obese patients when used along with pomegranate oil.
