Gudi Padwa 2026: When Is It? Date, Puja Timings, Rituals, And Significance
Gudi Padwa is the beginning of the New Year for people from Maharashtra and some regions of Goa. This festival is celebrated by following the traditional procedures, enjoying traditional foods, and by the practice of hoisting a Gudi outside every house, which is believed to bring victory, prosperity, and good luck.
This festival is observed on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra and also marks the beginning of spring, hence this festival is linked with new beginnings and new hopes for the upcoming year.
Gudi Padwa 2026 Date
In 2026, Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on Thursday, March 19.
The festival is marked on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Chaitra. The day also marks the beginning of the Hindu lunar New Year in several parts of India.
Gudi Padwa is celebrated alongside other regional New Year festivals such as Ugadi in southern states and the beginning of Chaitra Navratri.

The festival is celebrated according to the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada tithi.

Rituals of Gudi Padwa
1. Raising the Gudi
One of the most significant traditions of Gudi Padwa is the installation of a Gudi in front of houses. A Gudi is created by using a bamboo stick and decorating it with a coloured cloth, neem leaves, mango leaves, and a string of flowers, and a silver or copper vessel on top of it. It is believed to symbolise victory, prosperity, and protection from negative energies.
2. Cleaning and Decorating Homes
Families begin the day by cleaning their homes and decorating the entrances with colourful rangoli and flower garlands. It is also believed that such decorations invite positivity, prosperity, and good luck into their lives in the coming new year.
3. Traditional Food
Special dishes and sweets are prepared to mark the occasion. People also eat a mixture of neem leaves and jaggery, which represents the bitter and sweet experiences that life offers.
4. Temple Visits and Prayers
People visit temples to offer their prayers and seek blessings for a happy, prosperous, and successful new year.
Significance of Gudi Padwa
Gudi Padwa has great cultural and spiritual significance. According to Hindu mythology, this day marks the beginning of creation by Lord Brahma. This day, therefore, represents a new beginning and a new era.
The Gudi itself is a symbol of victory and success. There are also some historical beliefs associated with the victory of Lord Rama after his return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.
Gudi Padwa thus symbolises hope, prosperity, and a new beginning of a new year with lots of opportunities and positive energies.
