Exercising During Navratri Fasting - What to Keep in Mind

Fasting during Navratri does not mean you have to stop exercise completely. But you need to change your workout according to your body condition. How you exercise depends on what type of fast you are doing and what you eat.

Navratri Fasting Exercise Safety Guide

When you fast, your body's sugar stores get used up and body starts using fat for energy. Heavy workouts like heavy weights or fast running need immediate sugar. Doing these on empty stomach can cause low sugar, dizziness, and weakness. It can also cause stress hormone increase which breaks down muscle instead of building it.

But light to moderate exercise is safe and useful. Brisk walking, yoga, pilates, light strength training helps to maintain muscle and improves sugar control.

Tips To Exercise Safely During Navratri Fasting

1. Drink enough water: Dehydration is the biggest risk during fasting. Drink water, coconut water, lemon water with sendha namak, or buttermilk to maintain salt and potassium.

2. Time your workout: Best time is shortly after your main meal - like after falahari dinner with kuttu, rajgira, etc. Or just before breaking fast so you can eat immediately after workout.

3. Listen to your body: Stop immediately if you feel dizzy, too much tiredness, cold sweats or fast heartbeat.

Note: Patients with diabetes, BP or heart disease should consult doctor before doing exercise with fasting. For healthy adults, reducing intensity is enough to stay safe and fit during Navratri.

Navratri fasting does not have to mean giving up physical activity, but it does call for a more mindful approach to exercise. Choosing lighter workouts, staying hydrated and timing physical activity around meals can help make fitness part of the fasting routine without putting unnecessary stress on the body.
