When we cough, it means our body is trying to resist infections and trying to prevent the throat and airways from various kinds of bacteria. If you are coughing too frequently and uncontrollably, it means you are having some serious underlying problems and hence, you need to see a doctor.

Besides viral infection, coughing can be caused by common cold, flu or smoking or other health problems like asthma, tuberculosis, lung disease, etc.

There are of course strong medicines that can be availed to get rid of coughing; but you can use some natural ingredients found at home to treat the problem as well.

These home remedies do not have any side effects like many medicines do. However, if you are still having cough despite taking these home ingredients, then you must consult a doctor.

Here are 8 such top home remedies to cure cough:


1. Lemon:

This citrus fruit can cure cough effectively. Lemons have anti-inflammatory properties, while the vitamin C in them helps fight infection. Mix two tablespoons of lemon juice with one tablespoon of honey and drink this healthy syrup several times in a day.


2. Almonds:

These have great nutritional properties that heal cough. Prepare a paste of soaked almonds and add a teaspoon of butter. Take this three to four times in a day to say goodbye to the symptoms that you are having.


3. Turmeric:

Turmeric has a therapeutic effect on cough, especially dry cough. Heat half a cup of water and add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and black pepper. Add some cinnamon sticks and boil it. You can also add some honey and drink this daily to see better results. You can also grind turmeric into a fine powder and drink it with water and honey.


4. Carrot Juice:

An essential vegetable, carrots have various nutrients that help in getting rid of the cough. Make a glass of juice using four to five carrots and add some honey. Drink this three to four times in a day.


5. Ginger:

Put ginger pieces into a cup of water and boil it. Drink this concoction three to four times in a day. Your sore throat will get a good relief while coughing and congestion will be cured. Add some lemon juice and honey to it as well.


6. Onion:

Take strong vapours of onion pieces. Also, mix one teaspoon of onion juice with pure honey and drink it twice in a day.


7. Garlic:

It has antibacterial properties that can cure cough. Boil 2 to 3 cloves of garlic and add a teaspoon of the herb called oregano. Cool it to room temperature. You can add some honey to it and drink it. You can also eat a clove of crushed garlic with some clove oil and honey.


8. Hot Milk:

Take hot milk with honey to get a great relief from dry cough. Take it before going to bed.
