Common Myths About HIV
There are many myths associated with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). Most people don't have the right knowledge about it. People think that they can get infected with HIV even if they spend time with other HIV positive people. Myths like mosquito bites and touching HIV positive people can transmit HIV still exist.
Although, conditions are changing and people discuss about it openly, there is a long way to go. The key to prevent HIV is to have correct information. Here are some common myths about HIV that are not true:
Myth 1: I can get HIV by if I spend time with people who are infected with HIV

Researches have shown that HIV cannot be transmitted through touch, tears, sweat, or saliva. It is evident that you cannot catch HIV if you work or spend time with HIV positive people. There is no harm in working with them.
Myth 2: There is no need to have safer sex (use a condom) during sexual contact if both partners already have HIV
It is very important to use condom during sexual intercourse even if you and your partner are already infected with the virus. There are different strains of HIV. If you don't have safe sex, your partner may exchange different strains of HIV
Myth 3: Getting HIV is end of life
Though there is no cure for HIV, it doesn't mean that your life is over. A person infected with HIV can also live a good life. Antiretroviral drugs allow HIV-positive people to live better and longer life.
Myth 4: I will be alright if I take drugs continuously
It is true that antiretroviral drugs are constantly improving and extending the lives of HIV infected people. But it does have many serious side effects too. You have to take care of health very well even if you are taking these drugs.
Myth 5: Mosquito-bites spread HIV
It is a very common myth that you can get infected with HIV through mosquito bites. There is nothing to support this. Several studies have been done in the past that proved it wrong.
Myth 6: I have a faithful partner, I can never get HIV
Even if you have a faithful and loving partner, you don't know if he or she is already infected or not. He might have a sexual history. One can be HIV positive for years without any symptoms.
Myth 7: HIV cannot spread through oral sex
If you indulge in oral sex with a partner who is HIV positive, you too can get infected. Especially, one should avoid oral sex when you have any cuts, sores or abrasions in your penis or vagina. It is advisable to use condoms during oral sex.
