Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023: These 3 Foods May Increase Breast Cancer Risk
Every year in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed to raise public awareness about breast cancer.
The theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023 is "Close the care gap", which emphasizes the importance of understanding the disparities in cancer care and taking steps to address them.

Breast cancer is a growing concern among women worldwide, including in India. According to the latest data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), breast cancer is the most common cancer among Indian women, accounting for 27% of all cancer cases in the country.
While genetics and hormonal factors play a role, lifestyle choices, including diet, also influence the risk of breast cancer.

Foods May Increase Breast Cancer Risk
1. Processed Meats
Research published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2018 found that consuming processed meats, such as sausages, bacon, and ham, was associated with a 9% higher risk of breast cancer.
For instance, women who ate two or more servings of these processed meats per week had a 9% increased risk of breast cancer compared to those who ate no processed meats.

2. Sugary Drinks
A study in the British Journal of Cancer in 2019 highlighted that women who consumed sugary drinks regularly had a 22% increased risk of breast cancer. The study also found that the risk was even higher among women who were obese.
This indicates that sugary drinks may be a contributing factor in the development of breast cancer.
3. Trans Fats
Trans fats, often found in fried and baked goods, have been linked to breast cancer risk. A 2017 meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Nutrition revealed that a high intake of trans fats was associated with a 13% higher risk of breast cancer.

On A Final Note...
While these foods may be part of our daily lives, you need to be mindful of their potential impact on breast cancer risk.
Indian women, like women everywhere, should consider limiting their consumption of these foods to reduce their risk. Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and stay physically active.

Disclaimer: It's important to remember that no single food is solely responsible for the development of breast cancer. Genetics, hormonal factors, and overall lifestyle choices also play significant roles.
Always consult with a healthcare professional for advice on breast cancer prevention and detection.
