Weekend Special: Fish Koliwada Recipe

The term 'Koliwada' refers to the fishermen's colony. This recipe hails from the kitchen of the Kolis or the fishermen of Maharashtra region. Hence the name, fish Koliwada was coined. This finger-licking delight is quite popular in the food joints of Mumbai. Obviously not everyone has the chance to travel all the way to Mumbai to taste these delightful appetizers. However, we can give you secret of making this mouthwatering fish recipe at home.

To prepare fish Koliwada, the fish pieces are first marinated for about half an hour, dipped in a spicy batter and then deep fried. Sounds simple, isn't it? So, try it out at home this weekend and enjoy the lip-smacking taste of this exotic fish recipe.

Weekend Special: Fish Koliwada Recipe

Serves: 3-4
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • King fish- 500 gms
  • Red chilli powder- 1½ tsp
  • Besan- 100gms
  • Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
  • Ginger-garlic paste- ½ tsp
  • Garam masala- 1tsp
  • Jeera powder- ½ tsp
  • Juice of a lime sized ball of tamarind
  • Ajwain (carrom seeds)- 1tsp
  • Salt- as per taste

(Optionally you can add 1/2 tsp tandoori colour)

For Garam masala (Grind all ingredients together in a mixer)

  • Cloves- 2tbsp
  • Cardamom- 2tbsp
  • Aniseed- 2tbsp
  • Cinnamon sticks- 3 (small)

Method

  1. Clean and wash fish add turmeric powder and salt keep it for half an hour.
  2. Mix all the above ingredients except fish and make a thick consistency.
  3. Add the fish to the batter. Leave it to marinate for half an hour.
  4. Deep fry in oil on medium flame till it turns reddish brown in colour.
  5. Sprinkle chaat masala and lemon juice over it and serve.

The delicious fish Koliwada is ready to be served. Enjoy this sumptuous dish with mint chutney.
