10 Ingredients To Lighten Dark Underarms Naturally

Every time you think of wearing that chic spaghetti top or ultra feminine sleeveless gown, the first thought that inadvertently crosses through your mind is about the stubbly dark armpits. It is an image breaker, and effectively prevents free movement of your limbs.

From stretching your arms fully to picking up that salad bowl, to putting your arms up in the air and doing a jig on the dance floor, you cannot help but think about the dark underarms peeking out, dampening your mood and confidence.

Dark underarms are more common than you think, and its reason can be divided into two categories - generic and medical. Generic being shaving, excessive sweating and usage of antiperspirants, whereas, medical reasons can be boiled down to insulin, hormonal disorders or obesity.

The first step to treating the condition is knowing the exact cause. If it is medical, you may need the assistance of a reputed doctor; however, if it is generic, simple homemade remedies can do the trick.

Listed here are simple, easy and natural ingredients that will not only lighten the discolouration of the underarms, but also slough off dead skin cells!


Baking Soda

Anti-bacterial properties present in baking soda will remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, lighten the skin tone, while killing odour-causing bacterias. Make a thick paste with baking soda and water and apply it to your underarms. After a minute, scrub the area to slough off accumulated dead cells, wash it with cold water and pat dry.


Coconut Oil

Rich in vitamin E, coconut oil not only nourishes the skin, but also lightens the skin tone. Massage the oil into your skin and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse it off with a mild soap and lukewarm water. Repeat the procedure three to four times a week for visible results.



Being mildly acidic in nature, potatoes work as an excellent bleaching agent. Here is what you need to do. Grate a potato and extract its juice. Apply the solution to your underarms. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Once dry, wash it clean with cold water.



Just like potatoes, cucumbers too work as a natural bleaching agent. Rub a cucumber slice to the affected area. In order to intensify its effect, extract the cucumber juice and combine it with a pinch of turmeric and lemon juice. Apply the paste to the affected area, leave it on for 30 minutes and wash it clean. For faster results, try this method every day.


Olive Oil

Olive oil is a strong source of anti-oxidants and has anti-bacterial properties that can even out skin tone, while killing any odour-causing bacterias. Mix a teaspoon of olive oil with a tablespoon of brown sugar. Wet your skin on the underarms and apply the mixture. Scrub the area for two minutes before rinsing with cold water.



Lactic acid present in yogurt lightens skin tone without being harsh. Put a teaspoon of plain yogurt in a bowl and whisk it until it forms a smooth consistency. Using a cotton ball apply the yogurt to the affected area. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it with cold water. Try this method every day for significant changes in the skin tone.


Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil plays a dual role - lightening the skin tone and nourishing the skin deeply. Simply apply organic sunflower oil directly to the dark area. Wait for about 15 minutes and then rinse it clean. Follow the procedure once every week for quick results.


Egg Oil

The benefits of egg oil on the skin goes back in time. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, egg oil promotes the regeneration of new skin cells, making the skin smooth and even toned. Massage generous amounts of egg oil on your arm pits. Leave it on overnight. In the morning wash it clean with a mild cleanser and follow it up with a light moisturizer.



Lemon is a rich source of both anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties, which lightens the skin tone by sloughing off dead skin cells. Sprinkle sugar on a lemon wedge. Scrub the underarm area with the wedge for a few minutes. Later, rinse it off with cold water.



Being a rich source of AHAs, apples kill the bacteria that cause darkening of the skin. Take a ripe apple and mash it into a fine pulp. Apply the paste to the affected area. Once dry, spritz some water on it and gently massage it on your skin in a circular motion to exfoliate. Wipe it clean with wet wipes or cloth.



Saffron acts as a natural deodorant that also works to soften and even out skin tone. Mix a few strands of saffron with a teaspoon of thick milk cream. Whisk until the components combine well. Apply it to your dark underarms. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it with cold water. Follow the procedure twice a week for quick results.
