Two of the most popular beverages consumed worldwide are tea and coffee. But all tea and coffee drinkers worry about one thing - how can you remove tea and coffee stains from teeth.
Do they really stain your teeth and rob you of your dazzling white smile? In fact they do, especially if you have strong black tea or coffee at regular intervals everyday.
The surface of our teeth contains fine ridges. When we consume dark coloured beverages like tea, coffee or colas these get deposited between these ridges leading to stained teeth.
Furthermore, the tannic acid present in tea is capable of creating pores in the enamel. These pores collect pigments from every sip of the beverage leaving you with brown or yellow teeth. The tannic acid in tea also makes it a greater culprit in comparison to coffee.
In order to be cautious and prevent the stains from appearing there are a couple of measures one can take. You could try not having tea and coffee everyday, but then these are too good to be given up. A sip or two of water after tea and coffee helps rinse the teeth, remove tea stains and prevent accumulation of pigments.
Chewing on gum is another option. Using a straw also helps prevent tea and coffee from coming in contact with teeth to a great extent.
Tips to remove tea and coffee stains from teeth:
We have certain means to minimize the staining of teeth but what if they are already stained? We all know that bright white teeth give a great boost to one's confidence and hence it is essential to know how to remove tea and coffee stains from teeth. Apart from toothpastes available in the market, there are homemade solutions that you can try. The choice is yours.
There are various brands of toothpastes available in the market that promise to give you sparkling teeth, remove tea stains and help achieve a brilliantly white smile. You need to regularly brush your teeth and assist the brushing with proper flossing.
If your teeth are overly stained and you feel whitening products cannot be of much help you can visit your dentist. A regular cleaning procedure will help you get rid of the stains. This may take more than one sitting depending upon the severity of the staining, but once done you will appreciate the change.
Lime and salt
You might have often seen elderly people with perfect white teeth. If you ask them how to remove tea and coffee stains from teeth, they might give you age old methods. One of these is the use of lime and salt. In the juice of one lime add enough salt to make a paste and use this to brush your teeth. Over a period of time the stains will go.
Using the plain and humble baking soda is another great way to remove brown stains and whiten your teeth. Simply dip your wet toothbrush in baking soda and brush your teeth as you would with toothpaste. Make sure that the soda reaches all corners of your teeth.
Mixed with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide too provides marvelous results. You could take two tablespoons of baking soda, two drops of hydrogen peroxide and mix enough water to make a paste. Now carefully brush your teeth with the paste.
If you wish to try a natural method try rubbing your teeth with a cut strawberry or the inside of a banana peel. Both methods have proven to be effective to a great extent.
