Common Sunscreen Misconceptions You Should Stop Believing
It's time to debunk some of the misconceptions regarding the use of a sunscreen. Read on to stop believing in these.
As per recent studies, it has been noted that skin tan and skin damage by the sun can also give rise to a person developing skin cancer. In order to keep your skin safe and prevent cancer, it is very important to use a sunscreen. There are a few misconceptions however on the use of a sunscreen, which we'll debunk here!
Due to active ingredients present in a sunscreen, it helps to protect your skin from getting damaged due to the UVA and UVB rays. Other than protecting your skin from getting tanned, regular application of sunscreen prevents the risk of skin cancer.
Well, concept of sunscreen can be extremely confusing because there are many myths surrounding this product. Here, we've mentioned to you some of the common sunscreen misconceptions that you should stop believing in now!
Apply Sunscreen Beforehand
Many of them believe that sunscreen should be applied in advance, so that your skin absorbs the sunscreen and this also protects your skin from getting damaged. Most of them apply sunscreen while getting ready, so that the sunscreen protects their skin fully. However, this is a myth that sunscreen should be applied beforehand. Sunscreen can be applied just 20 minutes before going out under the sun.
Waterproof Sunscreen
Waterproof sunscreens are quite famous in the market for the fact that they do not melt and stay on for a longer period of time. However, there is a misconception that waterproof sunscreen is not washed away by sweat and should not be reapplied again. But the fact is, even waterproof sunscreen gets washed away by the sweat or water. The only difference is waterproof sunscreen stays on for a longer period of time compared to the regular sunscreens.
Sunscreen Protects Your Skin Throughout The Day
This may be the biggest lie you actually believe! No matter what the brand and the quality of the sunscreen is, it does not last longer than 3 hours. You will always need to reapply sunscreen after equal intervals of time, so that it stays on for a long period of time. Re-applying of sunscreen can help to provide better protection to the skin.
People With Dark Skin Tone Should Not Apply Sunscreen
People with dark skin feel that they have dark skin already and hence they don't need to apply sunscreen on their body. However, the fact about sunscreen is that it does not promote fair skin, but it helps to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. No matter what your skin complexion is, a sunscreen should be used to prevent the skin burns and skin cancer.
Prevents Skin From Getting Vitamin D
Application of sunscreen does not affect the absorption of Vitamin D you get from the sunlight. If not sunlight, you can get enough amount of Vitamin D from supplements and by following a balanced diet.
Sunscreen Is Only For The Face
This is a big No! Most of us prefer wearing a sunscreen only on the face because we feel it is just made for the face. You should apply sunscreen on the body as well, as the strong UVB and UVA rays can sometimes pass through the clothes and affect your skin. So, it is always good to apply a sunscreen on the body and keep it healthy all the time.
A Little Amount Is Enough
You need to apply a generous amount of sunscreen, so that the harmful rays do not penetrate into the skin. Apply an ounce full of sunscreen and allow the skin to absorb it completely. Although you have applied enough amount of sunscreen, it is important to re-apply the sunscreen after 3-4 hours.
Sunscreen Should Not Be Applied With Makeup On
There is a myth that you cannot apply a sunscreen when you are applying makeup. However, while applying makeup, you should apply sunscreen as a base and then apply makeup over it. Sunscreen helps the makeup to last longer and also protects your skin. However, make sure you are using a sunscreen that is not thick in consistency, so that it does not clog the pores.
