Women’s Day 2026 Special: “Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams”, Bhabiji… Fame Shubhangi Atre Opens Up On Her Journey
On the occasion of International Women's Day, Boldsky spoke exclusively with popular television actress Shubhangi Atre, best known for playing Angoori Bhabhi in the iconic comedy show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain.
From a small-town girl with big dreams to becoming one of television's most loved faces, Shubhangi's journey is a story of determination, discipline, and passion.
"I Always Wanted to Be An Actor"
Shubhangi revealed that acting was always her dream, even though she came from a non-film background. "I am from a non-filmy background, but I always wanted to be an actor. Art has always been my inclination since childhood."
Before stepping into acting, she trained in Kathak dance and even received national-level recognition. "I started learning Kathak and even won a national award. That artistic background helped me build confidence."
However, her journey was far from easy. She got married early at the age of 21 and became a mother at 22. Later, after moving to Pune, she decided to pursue acting seriously.
Taking The Leap Into Acting
Shubhangi recalled how uncertain the journey initially felt, especially without industry connections. "Nobody knew me in Mumbai or in the drama world. But when you truly want something from your heart, the universe somehow opens the path."
She began auditioning and eventually got opportunities that slowly helped her establish herself in the television industry. Today, after nearly 19 years in the industry, she continues to win hearts with her performances.
Stepping Out Of The Comfort Zone
Coming from a small-town background, adapting to the fast-paced Mumbai entertainment industry was a huge transition. "When you step out of your comfort zone, that's when real life begins."
She admitted that the journey involved struggles, failures, and learning experiences.
"Entering the industry is easy, but sustaining yourself here is very difficult. Consistency and hard work are extremely important." Shubhangi also credits her parents for instilling strong values in her life.
"My parents always told me to work with honesty, discipline, and humility. Those values have helped me throughout my career."
Television Is A Female-Dominated Medium
During the conversation, Shubhangi highlighted how television has been an empowering space for women. "Television is a female-dominated medium, and strong female characters get a lot of love from audiences."
She believes that actresses should confidently demand what they deserve. "If you are doing good work, you should speak openly about what you deserve. Women should not hesitate to ask for their rightful space."
The Iconic Angoori Bhabhi
Talking about her role as Angoori Bhabhi in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, Shubhangi described the character as a blessing.
"Angoori is one of the most iconic characters on television. I feel extremely blessed that audiences loved me in this role for almost ten years."
She also said comedy never felt monotonous because every episode brought something new. "Every week we had new stories and new get-ups. That kept the character fresh and exciting."
Eventually, she decided to explore new opportunities and expand her acting horizons.
Message For Young Women Entering The Industry
Shubhangi also addressed common misconceptions about the entertainment industry.
"There are many rumours about the industry, but my experience has been positive. In 19 years, I have never faced anything like that."
She advised young aspirants not to be attracted by glamour alone. "Glamour is only a small part of this industry. What truly matters is hard work, patience, and consistency."
She also stressed the importance of having guidance and support while entering the industry. "Young people should not come alone without understanding the industry. It's important to have support from family or trusted people."
Women's Day Message
Ending the conversation with a heartfelt message for women, Shubhangi said: "First of all, I want to wish every woman a very happy International Women's Day. Never give up on your dreams."
She added that women possess incredible emotional strength and multitasking abilities. "Women are emotionally strong and capable of managing many responsibilities. If you truly want to do something, you can definitely achieve it."
