Karwa Chauth 2023: History And Significance
The term 'Karwa Chauth' is a combination of two words: 'Karwa', which means a clay pot, and 'Chauth', which means the fourth. Mainly observed by Hindu women, on this day they pray and fast for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
The ritual of Karwa Chauth involves women decking up in gorgeous attire, wearing mehendi and jewelry, fasting from sunrise to moonrise, and the fast is broken upon sighting the moon, often through a sieve, followed by the husband feeding his wife her first bite of food and water.
The festival fosters a sense of belonging, reinforces marital bonds, and stands as a testament to the strength and commitment of countless women who diligently observe this fast.
Another interesting aspect of Karwa Chauth is the tradition for newlywed brides to receive gifts from their mother-in-law, known as sargi, a pre-dawn meal, which is believed to strengthen the bond between them. Typically, this thali contains sweets, fruits, nuts, and vermicelli.
