Let us learn a few practical hints for resolving or neutralising anger. If the anger is merely circumstantial, emotional or because of accumulation of old grievances, then there are simple techniques to overcome it:
Do not act or take important decisions till the wave of anger has subsided. Think of the damage it might cause to your relationships and image. For example, when you receive an irritating communication over email, formulate your angry response by all means – but don"t hit the 'send' button immediately. Sleep over it and read it again the next day. You won"t feel like sending it in most of the cases when you review it. If you still do, repeat step 1!
Walk away from the person or situation causing anger. The easiest way to neutralise anger is to exhaust the energy going into such negative motions through physical or mental diversions. Exercise or go for a jog when angry, till the intensity of the emotion is exhausted. Regular exercise and physical work is thus very helpful in releasing negative energy we accumulate daily.
Pranayama: Contrast your breathing patterns when you're angry and when you're in a calm or happy state of mind. Controlling the breath is another effective way of bringing the emotion under control. Practice 9-18 cycles of rhythmic breathing when you're angry and see how it works. Regular practice of pranayama is excellent in keeping the mind in a balanced state. But a note of caution – learn these breathing techniques from a qualified and experienced teacher. Do not overdo it since pranayama increases oxygen supply to the brain and can cause 'overheating.'
Pratipaksha Bhavana: I had mentioned this earlier in the column on Abhaya. Raise the opposite of anger with a conscious effort in your mind. Think of people, situations, objects or scenery which can neutralise your anger. For example, a beloved child or a beautiful scenery.
Mantra Japa: Repeat a mantra 108 times when you feel angry. It will not only neutralise your anger but also add punya to your karmic account.
Vichara: While all the above methods are symptomatic cures for anger, Vichara is the most potent, direct and long-term solution to anger. Meaningful Introspection should become a regular habit. Keep a diary and analyse your deepest desires, frustrations and expectations. Do not allow them to build into complex patterns of unconscious thought and behaviour. Resolve the residues before they gain strength.
