Thirukural-Assessment of Relative Strength-Kural 474

Thirukural 474
Amaindhaan kolukaan alavariyaan thannai
Viyandhaan viraindhu kedum

Those, who do not know to live in peace, knowing their own limitation,
But are full of self-conceit, will surely come to a swift end
.

This translation is, to some extent, based on V V S Iyer"s.

Rajaji"s interpretation of this Kural is pertinent and elaborate as follows:

“He meets his end speedily, who does not behave wisely towards alien powers, and who does not realize the limitations of his own strength, but loses himself in self-over estimation."

Assessment of Relative strength

Thiruvalluvar in assessment of relative strength, advises the importance of assessing the relative strength of others as well as one's own before making a decision.

Thirukural

Thirukural is an ethical treatise belonging to Tamil classical literature, written by Thiruvalluvar. In Kural 474, Valluvar emphasises the need to assess one's one relative strength. RamanandaAdigalar Foundation has taken Thirukural to a larger reading mass with its English translation.
