Tirukkural-On Virtue-The Renunciation-Kural 349

Thirukkural, Kural 349

Patratra kannae pirapparukkum mattru
Nilaiyaamai kaanap padum

Final release comes only to those who have severed all bonds;
All else linger in this impermanent world.

The abandonment of all attachments is the only road to deliverance. This is also the Gita message.'But his longing also ceases, who sees the supreme" – (Gita 2, 59). There is no point in piecemeal privation of penance. Full renunciation of all attachment and desire will alone help.

That is why it was said of yore in Tamil tradition

'Atradhu patrenil utradhu veedu'

May we remind ourselves again of Christ"s injunctions to the young man who wanted to be perfect?

'Go and sell all you have, give to the poor and
follow me" (Matt. 19:21)
