Narada Muni is perhaps one of the most recognizable characters in the Hindu mythology. He can be seen prominently in many of the mythological stories. He features in epics such as the Mahabharata, Ramayana and Srimad Bhagwat Gita. He also plays a major role in the Puranas.

In this Kalpa, he was born as the son of Lord Brahma. He is famous as being one of the greatest devotees of Lord Maha Vishnu.

Narada Muni is infamous in the mythologies for being meddlesome and a gossip monger. But that could not be more far from the truth. Malice is never the intention of this Great Sage.

His actions are often the seeds for great good in the long run. Narada Muni has been the catalyst of many important events in the Hindu mythology.

He was the one who converted Angulimal, who was a robber, into the great Sage Valmiki; and it was because of him that Kamsa did not spare even one of Lord Krishna's siblings.

Narada Muni wanders the three worlds and carries news from one place to the other. He is called the first journalist. He wears saffron robes and has his hair tied into a knot.

Narada Muni carries a Khartal and a Veena by the name of Mahati. He uses these instruments to sing the praises of his Lord, Lord Maha Vishnu. The name of Narayana flows unceasingly from his lips and his mind is always bent on the Lord's name.

Narada Muni is forever alert and present to help the cause of Lord Maha Vishnu and it is believed that he also often travels beside the Lord on the bird Garuda.

12th of May, 2017, is celebrated as Narada Jayanti. It is believed to be the day that Narada was born. As per the regional lunar-solar calendar, Narada Jayanti is celebrated on the day after the Poornima of the Vaishakha month, which is the Pratipada day of Krishna Paksha.

The Previous Birth Of Narada Muni

In the previous kalpa, Narada Muni was born as the son of a maid who worked in an ashram where holy men resided. Just as a boy, Narada Muni watched the holy men sing the praises of the Lord Maha Vishnu and was inspired. The words of the holy men made him become free of Maya at a very young age. When his mother passed away due to a snake bite, all his attachments and bonds with this world were broken. He then became an ascetic and pleased with his devotion, he received a boon that he would be born as Narada Muni in this Kalpa.

Patrakar Divas

Narada Muni's birthday is celebrated as the Patrakar Divas. Narada Muni is considered as the first journalist. He roams the earth, the heavens and the underworld and carries the news and messages from one place to the other. This is due to a boon he received that he can go whereever he pleases at will.

Patron Of The Musicians

It is said that Narada Muni has a very melodious voice and he is always singing the praise of the Lord Maha Vishnu. He is never seen without his veena that is named Mahati. This is why the musicians of the Hindu community hold Narada Muni at high esteem. He is worshipped by them on the occasion of Narada Jayanti.

Narada Muni Was Instrumental For The Ramavatar

It was due to a curse of Narada Muni that Lord Maha Vishnu had to be separated from his wife in Ramavatar. It is also due to the curse that Lord Rama had to ask the ape clan to help him rescue his wife.

Narada Muni Might Be Of Chinese Origin

In the Rig Veda, it is mentioned that Narada Muni was a resident of the 'Hoon Desh'. This area lies in the present day Uttarakhand on the borders of China.

A legend says, "Hoon Desh Me Rahate Narad Tholing Math Wale [Narad of Tholing Math lives in Hoon Desh]".

Master Of 64 Vidyas

Narada Muni was not just a sage who wandered the world, passing chunks of news and information to everyone he met, he was also a wise and knowledgeable person who had mastered the 64 vidyas.

Books Named After Him

Narada Muni has two books named after him. They are called the Narada Purana and the Narada Sukti.

Temple Dedicated To Narada Muni

There is a temple dedicated to Narada Muni in the state of Karnataka. In the river Krishna, there is a small island called Korva. The Narada temple is built on this island and is called Naradgadde.
