Meaning Of The Saat Pheras
It would not be wrong to say that the satt pheras are the most integral part of a Hindu wedding ceremony. Every community in India has its own wedding customs and rituals. But the saat pheras and their meaning remains constant in every single Hindu community. Without this ritual, no Hindu wedding can be considered complete.
What Are The Saat Pheras?
The bride drapes that the bride and groom are tied to each other. Then, the couple is asked to take seven rounds around the holy Agni or fire of the havan kund. For every round around the fire, there is a special vow that the couple have to make to each other. The saat pheras are sometimes also referred to as the shaptapadi.
Meaning Of Saat Pheras
Phera 1: Nourishment
The first phera of the saat phera hold much significance for the bride. In this phera she promises to take over the kitchen in her husband's house and provide him food. The groom on the other hand promises to provide financially for his wife all life long.
Phera 2: Protection n Support
The second of the saat pheras symbolises the vow of protection. The groom promises to protect his bride physically from any harm. And the bride in turn vows to stand by her husband's side in bad times.
Phera 3: Prosperity
In third phera, the groom tells the bride that she will be his 'grihalakshmi' or 'lady luck'. Now that her steps have led her into his house and life, prosperity is sure to follow. The bride also promises to play the part of domestic goddess and nurture her home with love.
Phera 4: Family
The 4th phera is vow from the bride and groom that they will accept each others family happily. They will respect and love their in-laws just as much as they respect their parents and siblings.
Phera 5: The Heir
In the 5th phera, the bride and groom promise each other that they shall produce an heir to carry forward their family name. They shall nurture the child with love and care.
Phera 6: In Sickness and Health
The 6th phera is the legendary vow that the couple will love, respect and care for each other in both in times of sickness and health.
Phera 7: Best Friends
The last of the saat pheras has a lot of significance. In this last step, the groom and bride vow to each other that they will be best friends and share all their secrets from this very moment.
