Originating from Garur shila, The Ganga empties herself in to the the tank of Tapt kund in Badrinath relentlessly despite the surrounding snow fall and freezing tempearatures. It is believed that Agni deva's constant presence is behind this phenomenon. As per one more legend, the Ganga River, as soon as she was released from the matted locks of Lord Shiva during Gangavataran, flowed towards the feet of Lord Vishnu and settled there at the Tapt kund.

Since she emerged out of the kapala of Lord Shiva, her waters turned into hot thermal springs as they entered into Tapt Kund. Situated very near the temple of Badrinath, it is an easy alternative for the devotee visitors to take a holy dip in it before entering the temple for a darshan. Located in the middle of the way from Alakananda river to Badrinath, the Tapta kund here is a natural thermal spring of hot water, which has a temperature of 45 degrees. Tapt Kund is at a distance of one kilometer from Badrinath Bus Stand. Tapt Kund is at the entrance of Badrinath Temple.
A dip in Tapt Kund, which is the natural abode of Lord Agni, not only allows you a respite from the freezing cold around you, it also has amazing healing properties. It rids you free of several ailments and washes the sins of past lifetimes. It cleanses you deeply from your mind heart, body and soul. It is a compulsory ritual for every one who likes to visit the Lord Badri Vishal.
Healing Features
The water in Tapt Kund, is supposed to have medicinal properties that are therapeutic and cures skin and other bodily ailments. It is also believed that, taking a holy dip in the Kund, before entering the Badrinarayan temple premises, will purify a person and rids him of sins.Therefore, the Tapt Kund is always crowded with several devotees who are eager to rejuvenate themselves and gain good health through a therapeutic dip in this kund.
Legends
There is a legend which goes thus. As a response to Lord Agni Dev's austere Tapasya, Lord Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, offered him a boon that he could serve devotees here and make Tapt Kund his permanent home.
Another belief amongst devotees is that Tapt Kund is from where the tarpans are offered to ancestors and will lead them to peace and heaven. Hence tarpans are vastly conducted here by the devotees.
Mystical Properties Of The Kund
The best thing about the Tapt Kund is that temperature of water is about 45 degrees and keeps varying throughout the day based on the seasons. The entire area of Tapt Kund measures about 17 feet by 15 feet. Maintaining hygiene level does not pose a problem in Tapt kund and it has demarcated bathing area for women and men.
Nearby in the vicinity, there are two more kunds namely Narad Kund and Surya kund. Narad kund is named after Maharshi Narad. Obtaining its name after Narad Muni, Narad Kund is considered to be a so sacred that the current image of Badri Narayan which is installed in the Badrinath temple, can be discovered in the Narad Kund, and for the first time, this phenomenal occurence was noticed by the famous saint Adi Shankaracharya.
It is believed that it is the starting point of heaven that emerges from this point in the village. Here people worship the souls of their ancestors for getting them peace. This pond is known to relieve people of their financial problems as well. When a person dips into this pond, the water adjusts itself to the temperature and tolerance limits of the person who has dipped into it. It is the experience of every devotee that once they jump into the pond, they will be ejected upwards with doubled force.
Tapt Kund is also famous for its medicinal properties and the water is said to cure different kinds of skin allergies. The temperature is an average of 55 degree celsius in the pond while the temperature everywhere around is always around 9-10 degree celsius.
There are five huge sacred stones located around the Narad Kund namely Panch Shilas which are known to be immensely powerful and hence highly sought after by devotees. The Agni teerth or the hot thermal springs helps cleanse the devotee and relieves him of ache in limbs and bodily ailments as well.

Tapt Kund, is in Badrinath and hence has got a good connectivity by road, rail or air to other prominent areas of Uttarakhand.
