DASHAVATAR: 10 AVATARS OF LORD VISHNU
Unable to bear the mounting burden of sins committed by humans on the planet- the sins include those committed by humans in destroying plants, animals, water, the air and themselves- mother earth urged Lord Vishnu to act before it was too late. This was the main incident, according to Hindu scriptures, that triggered the birth of Lord Krishna and the foremost reason that answers the story behind Lord Krishna's birth.
One such evil force was in the form of Kamsa, the despotic ruler of Mathura. Kamsa's sins had reached the pinnacle of evil. There soon came a day when Kamsa's sister Devaki was married to Vasudeva and when the marriage was taking place, a heavenly voice uttered the following words: "The 8th child born to Vasudeva and Devaki will be your slayer". The furious Kamsa unsheathed his sword immediately and went for Devaki's life. However, he spared her life when Vasudeva urged him to spare his wife and promised to surrender every son born to them. Kamsa imprisoned them to keep a close watch on the couple.
With every child born to the couple, Kamsa slaughtered every one of them. When the 7th was slaughtered, the couple panicked and sought protection for the 8th Child by pleading to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared in Vasudeva's dream one night and asked him to take the child to Nanda, the cowherd, a devout worshipper of Lord Vishnu. He further instructed Vasudeva to exchange the baby boy with Nanda's daughter who was due to be born on the same day.
When the 8th child was born, he was the incarnation of none other than Lord Vishnu. The prison doors opened by themselves and Vasudeva was relieved from his shackles. Torrential rains and thunderstorms followed. The rivers gave way to Vasudeva while he escorted the child to Nanda. After handing over the child, Vasudeva left for prison with Nanda's new born child. Kamsa did not know of the events that took place.
When Kamsa went to slay the baby daughter of Nanda, she suddenly tuned into an angel and said to him " Your slayer has already taken birth and is elsewhere. You will never know who he is until he comes of age to slay you".
This is the story behind Lord Krishna's birth. This story has been produced the way it exists in Hindu mythology.
