Purnima or Poornima is an auspicious day celebrated on the Full Moon day as per the Hindu calendar. The day falls on the 15th tithi of the Shukla paksha or waxing moon of the lunar month. The end tithi of Poornima marks the fortnight of Krishna paksha or waning of the moon.
In a year, there are around 12 Full Moon days or Purnima days and each has its own significance. In Hinduism, many rituals and havans are performed on the day to get the blessings of the Lord Vishnu or Satyanarayan and Soma (Moon).
According to the Bhavishya Purana, it is believed that taking a dip in Holy River on this day washes away all the sins of a person. In other religions too, the day of Purnima holds a special significance. Devotees on this day usually perform ‘Nirjala vrat’ or without water fasting.
