Holi Dos and Don’ts 2026: Astrologer’s Tips For A Positive And Prosperous Year
Holi is often seen as a joyful festival of colours, laughter, and togetherness, but its deeper significance lies in renewal and inner cleansing. Rooted in ancient traditions, this festival marks the symbolic victory of devotion over negativity and the transition into a new seasonal cycle. The rituals observed during this time are believed to invite prosperity, strengthen relationships, and promote emotional and physical well-being.
We spoke to Ajit Pancholi, Vedic Astrology and Hindu Traditions Advisor, iMeUsWe, who listed mindful practices to make Holi not just a celebration, but a spiritually enriching experience.
Holi Dos and Don'ts 2026: Astrologer's Tips
For Prosperity and Debt Relief
'Holika Dahan' is considered an especially powerful time for releasing financial worries and inviting abundance. Offering mustard seeds, coconut, and grains into the sacred fire is believed to symbolise the removal of obstacles and the welcoming of prosperity. "Some families also write down financial concerns or worries and symbolically burn them in the fire as a gesture of letting go. Chanting Lakshmi or Narasimha mantras during this time is traditionally associated with attracting stability and protection," said Pancholi.
For Health and Protection
"Performing parikrama (circumambulation) of the Holika fire is believed to support physical and spiritual protection. Many traditions recommend applying a small amount of sacred ash from the Holika fire on the forehead the next morning as a symbol of purification," added Pancholi. Choosing natural herbal colours is also encouraged, as they are gentle on the skin and reflect the festival's connection with nature and seasonal change.
For Relationship Harmony
Holi is also a time to strengthen bonds and release misunderstandings. Offering jaggery and ghee into the fire symbolises sweetness and warmth in relationships. Many people use this moment to pray for the removal of ego and emotional distance. Initiating positive conversations or reconciliation after Holika Dahan is considered especially meaningful, as the festival encourages forgiveness and renewed connections.
Traditionally Recommended Rituals
Several time-honoured rituals continue to guide Holi celebrations across households. Holika Dahan is traditionally performed after sunset, preceded by a simple family puja seeking protection. "Offering grains from the new crop into the fire symbolises gratitude for the harvest and hopes for abundance in the coming year. On Rangwali Holi, obtaining blessings from elders is believed to invite positivity and harmony for the year ahead," said Pancholi.
What to Avoid on Holi
"From a spiritual and astrological perspective, certain actions are best avoided to preserve the sanctity of the festival. Disrespecting the ritual fire or treating it casually is discouraged, as it represents purification and transformation. Excessive intoxication is believed to disturb the spiritual balance of the day and diminish its significance," warned Pancholi.
Holi is also a reminder to celebrate with sensitivity. Hurting others physically or emotionally goes against the spirit of the festival, which stands for joy and goodwill. Some traditions also advise against beginning major financial commitments during unfavourable timings on Holi, recommending instead a focus on reflection and renewal.
Bottomline
Pancholi concluded, "Holi symbolises the burning of ego through Holika, the triumph of devotion through Prahlad, and the cleansing of emotions before the new season begins. Celebrated mindfully, the festival becomes a powerful opportunity to release the past and welcome new beginnings with positivity and balance."
