Pradosh Vrat dates or Pradosham is a sacred day and is observed twice on the 13th or Trayodashi Tithi of each lunar fortnight. According to the Hindu calender, there are two Trayodashi days in a month - one during the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and the other during the Krishna Paksha (waning month).
Pradosh Kaal is known as a period when the day and night meet. The Hindi meaning of ‘Pradosh’ is related to the evening time or the time at which the sun sets. Thus, this sacred day holds importance during the evening or ‘Sandhyakaal’ or ‘first phase of the beginning of night’.
Pradosham is a day that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and devotees from around the world,irrespective of age and gender,observe a fast on this day. According to the Skanda Puran, people can do two types of fast on this day as a devotion to the lord. In the first type, devotees have to avoid food from the sunrise to sunset and open it after worshipping Lord Shiva during the evening while in the second type, they have to restrict the food for 24 hours along with staying awake at night and praying the Lord.
The Hindu mythology reveals that on the day of Trayodashi,Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati will give fruitful results to their devotees and help them win over the enemies. It is also believed that the fast of Trayodashi gives the desired result when the rituals are done keeping in mind the auspicious dates as for each day, the benefits are different.
