Mahavir Jayanti 2026: PM Modi to Inaugurate Samrat Samprati Museum in Gandhinagar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Samrat Samprati Museum at Koba Tirth in Gandhinagar on March 31, coinciding with Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Diwas (Mahavir Jayanti), one of the most significant festivals in Jainism.
The inauguration of this museum is a part of PM Modi's visit to Gujarat, where he will also launch and lay the foundation stone for a number of infrastructure development projects in the state.
A Museum Rooted in Jain Heritage
This museum is named after Samrat Samprati, the grandson of the great Emperor Ashoka, who played a significant role in the popularisation of the religion of Jainism. It is meant to preserve and showcase the spiritual and cultural heritage of the people of India, with special emphasis on the religion of Jainism.
This museum is located on the campus of the Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra in Koba. It is designed to give visitors a detailed history of the religion of Jainism.
What the Museum Showcases
The Samrat Samprati Museum is a unique amalgamation of history, spirituality, and technology. It features:
- Seven expensive galleries on various facets of Jain philosophy, art, and history
- More than 2,000 rare artifacts, such as ancient manuscripts, coins, sculptures, and paintings
- Beautifully crafted stone and metal statues, along with traditional Jain artifacts such as "Tirth Patta" and "Yantra Patta"
- Audio-visual presentations to provide a more interactive experience
- Some exhibits date back centuries, offering insights into the evolution of Jain teachings, art, and cultural practices over time.
Blending Tradition with Technology
What sets the museum apart is its effort to merge ancient heritage with modern storytelling techniques. Visitors can experience interactive displays, digital galleries, and curated narratives that bring Jain philosophy, centred on non-violence, compassion, and discipline to life.
The museum is also expected to become an important stop for not only those who are devoted to the faith but also for students and enthusiasts of culture and history of civilisation in India.
Part of a Larger Development Push
The inauguration of the museum is one highlight of PM Modi's Gujarat visit, during which projects worth over ₹20,000 crore across sectors like infrastructure, railways, energy, and urban development are also being launched or dedicated to the nation.
A Cultural Milestone
The opening of the Samrat Samprati Museum on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti itself adds symbolic value to the celebration. It not only celebrates the teachings of Lord Mahavir but also reflects the commitment of the country towards the preservation and promotion of its glorious spiritual legacy.
The cultural and educational centre that the museum promises to become will play an important role in taking Jain heritage into the modern age.
