World Breastfeeding Week 2023: Expert Tips For Breastfeeding In Public; Is It Legal In India?
For many new moms, the thought of breastfeeding in public can be daunting. And tbh, it's not their fault - it's how the organ that is the breast is sexualised in our society, even the act of feeding your own child receives bombastic side eyes from the public.
Is breastfeeding in public legal in India?
While India has no legal statute dealing with breastfeeding in public, there is no rule or law that says breastfeeding in public is illegal - I mean, it's the most natural way for a baby to be fed [1]!
It is important to remember that breastfeeding is a protected right, and with a little preparation and confidence, you can breastfeed your baby wherever you are.

So, in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2023, we've put together some helpful tips for breastfeeding in public.
How To Breastfeed In Public?
1. Find a comfortable spot: Look for a quiet and comfortable place where you can sit and relax while breastfeeding. It could be a designated nursing room, a cosy corner in a café, or a park bench under a shady tree. Having a peaceful environment will help you feel more at ease.
2. Dress for accessibility: Wearing clothing that allows easy access to your breasts will make breastfeeding in public much simpler. Opt for tops with buttons, zippers, or wrap styles that can be easily undone or pulled aside. Layering with a nursing tank top or a breastfeeding-friendly bra can also provide added convenience.
3. Use a nursing cover or scarf: If you prefer a little extra privacy while breastfeeding, a nursing cover or scarf can be a great tool. These accessories provide coverage while allowing you to maintain eye contact with your baby. Choose a lightweight and breathable fabric for your comfort and your baby's.
4. Practice proper latch and positioning at home: Ensuring a proper latch and positioning is crucial for both your and your baby's comfort during breastfeeding. Practice at home and master different nursing hold, such as the cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, or football hold. Once you feel confident, you'll be able to breastfeed discreetly in public.

5. Embrace confidence: Remember that breastfeeding is a natural and normal part of life. Be proud of your ability to nourish your baby and don't let any judgment or negativity affect you. Surround yourself with supportive people who understand and appreciate the importance of breastfeeding.
On A Final Note...
Remember, practice makes perfect, and the more you breastfeed in different settings, the more comfortable you will become. So, go out there and embrace the beauty of breastfeeding wherever you go.
