Stem Cell Banking Explained: What Every Expecting Parent Should Know
The birth of a child is one of life's most meaningful milestones for parents, bringing with it both immense joy and important responsibility. Among the many decisions expecting parents face today, stem cell banking has emerged as an option for parents to consider while planning for their child's future health. Unlike other healthcare choices that can be revisited later, this is an opportunity available only at the time of birth, making informed decision-making very important.
We spoke to Dr Geetika Jassal, Medical Spokesperson, Cryoviva Life Sciences, who explained what stem cell banking is and what expecting parents should know before making a decision.
What is Stem Cell Banking?
"Stem cell banking is the process of collecting and processing stem cells from umbilical cord blood and, in some cases, cord tissue immediately after delivery. Stem cells have the ability to develop into specialised cell types, which can potentially help repair and regenerate damaged tissues," explained Dr Jassal.
They are currently used in the treatment of several medical conditions, including blood disorders such as leukaemia, certain immune system disorders, and inherited genetic conditions. Globally, stem cell transplants are used to treat more than 80 diseases, primarily those related to the blood and immune system.
"With ongoing developments in stem cell research, their potential role in treating other diseases, such as diabetes, nervous system injuries, and cardiovascular diseases, continues to be explored. As research advances, the list of possible uses for stem cells may continue to grow in the future," added Dr Jassal.
What Parents Should Know Before Deciding
Stem cell banking is now often described as a way to preserve future treatment options, whereas earlier it was being seen as a fad or gimmick by most parents. Considering the increase in lifestyle and hereditary diseases, more parents are focusing on preventive health measures and with increasing awareness regarding stem cell banking, a shift is seen where more parents are opting for stem cell banking services.
"However, parents should make this decision with a clear understanding of the likelihood of the child needing their own stored stem cells, which may be relatively low and even in some genetic conditions, the child's own cells may not be suitable for treatment," advised Dr Jassal.
Safety and Process
"The stem cell collection process is safe and painless. It is performed immediately after the child is born and does not interfere with childbirth. The collected stem cells are then processed and stored through cryopreservation in specialised, fully equipped laboratories, where they can be preserved for many years," said Dr Jassal.
When choosing a stem cell bank, parents should look for an accredited facility that complies with regulatory standards and follows stringent quality, processing, and storage protocols, while also maintaining transparency in outcomes.
Bottomline
Dr Jassal concluded, "Stem cell banking reflects a growing shift toward proactive and preventive thinking in healthcare. For some families, it offers reassurance for the future. The key is informed, balanced decision-making based on medical facts rather than perception."
