There could be many changes in the breasts during the breastfeeding stage. The size could increase either during the pregnancy or during the breastfeeding stage.

All changes that occur during that phase have only one purpose behind them. To help the mother feed the baby properly.

So, here are a few of such changes that occur during the breastfeeding stage.

Fact #1

During pregnancy, certain changes occur in the breasts. Firstly tiny bumps form around the nipples. The skin on the nipples tends to turn a bit darker. The purpose behind this is to let the baby identify the the nipple.

The purpose behind the formation of tiny bumps near the nipples is to secrete a greasy liquid that cleanses and lubricates the nipples.

Another change that occurs during the breastfeeding stage is that the breasts release a smell that resembles amniotic fluid. The baby will be able to move towards the nipple due to the smell.

Where does the milk come from? Well, there are clusters of tiny sacs in the breasts. Prolactin is the hormone that signals your body to produce milk.

At first, only colostrum is secreted. It is a protein-rich substance which looks like milk. After prolactin is active, breast milk starts coming.

During the first stage, there could be burning sensation in the breasts. It could gradually disappear later. Some women experience pricking or tingling sensation during breastfeeding.

Some women also feel contractions in the stomach during the initial stages of breastfeeding. That could be due to oxytocin.
