What Is Pregnancy Mask (Melasma): Ways To Manage It
Pregnancy comes with a lot of physical and emotional changes. It can be an exciting and challenging experience. It is not uncommon to experience changes in appetite, skin changes, mood swings, and physical discomfort during pregnancy. And one such skin change is - pregnancy mask or melasma.

What Is Pregnancy Mask (Melasma)?
Pregnancy mask, or melasma, is a common skin condition that affects many pregnant women. It is characterised by dark, irregularly shaped patches on the face, particularly the cheeks, nose, and forehead. The condition is thought to be caused by hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy, but can occur in women who are not pregnant [1].
The exact cause of pregnancy mask is not known, but it is believed to be related to hormonal changes during pregnancy. The condition is more common in women with darker skin tones, but it can affect any woman.
Pregnancy mask usually begins to appear during the second or third trimester of pregnancy and can last up to six months after giving birth.
Pregnancy Mask: How To Manage It?
Pregnancy mask often goes away after delivery. While the condition is harmless, it can be cosmetically unappealing and can cause emotional distress. Fortunately, there are a few ways to manage pregnancy mask [2]:

1. Wear sunscreen: Sun exposure can make pregnancy mask worse, so wearing sunscreen can help protect your skin and reduce the appearance of the dark spots. Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and UVA/UVB protection.
2. Avoid cosmetics: Cosmetics, such as foundation and blush, can irritate the skin and make the dark spots worse. Avoid these products or switch to hypoallergenic or mineral-based cosmetics.
3. Use a gentle cleanser: Choose a mild cleanser to avoid irritating your skin. Avoid harsh cleansers that can strip the skin of its natural oils.
4. Keep skin hydrated: It's important to keep your skin hydrated to improve the appearance of pregnancy mask. Use a moisturiser with SPF to help keep your skin hydrated and protected from the sun.
5. Use hydroquinone: Pregnancy masks can also be treated with certain prescription creams (such as hydroquinone). Hydroquinone helps reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin.
However, it is important to consult a doctor before using any skin care products during pregnancy. Additionally, some products may not be safe for use during pregnancy.

On A Final Note...
Remember ladies, pregnancy mask is not a serious condition and can be managed with proper treatment and prevention. It is important for pregnant women to be aware of the condition so that they can take the necessary steps to minimize its appearance.
