A joyous addition of a baby to the family is beyond words to describe for the parents and the entire family as a whole. But with a small baby comes those long waking hours that can be taxing. Most of the articles discuss solutions to this problem of less sleeping hours and long backlog of never ending tasks, but not many explain the reasons behind this behaviour of the child who is not sleeping. Lets discuss few facts about infant's sleep in this article today.
A small baby up till a few months of its birth needs at least 12-18 hours of sleep, but for most parents it is a cause of worry as their little ones just don’t sleep enough. Infants have no sense of day or night and can sleep whenever they feel up to it. They feel hungry often due to less milk in their tummies because of its small size. While breast feeding the frequency of waking is more often due to its light consistency as compared to formula milk or feed. These are few things parents should know about infant's sleep.
Baby Sleep Tips For New Mothers
In adults and older children, immediately after knocking off a person enters a N-REM or Non Rapid Eye Movement sleep for some time followed by REM sleep or Rapid Eye Movement Sleep. A normal adult drifts between REM and N-REM sleep all night long, but for babies it is a little different.
So here is a small list about the things parents should know about infant's sleep:

They Need 12-18 Hours Of Sleep
Facts about infant's sleep parents should know start with on an average the baby needs 12-18 hour of sleep for his healthy growth.

Sleep Patterns Followed By Babies
The baby follows a different sleep pattern than adult, things parents should know about infant's sleep are: REM sleep or the light sleep. They spend about 16 hours of sleep while adults and older children have lesser hours in their kitty.

The N-REM sleep has broadly four stages in infants:
1. Droopy eyes and lot of yawning.
2. Jumpy sleep where child wakes up even at slightest sound around him.
3. Quiet deep sleep when he is at rest completely.
4. Lastly, very-very deep sleep when he doesn't even mind the TV.

Maximum Span Of Sleep Is 2-3 Hours And Minimum Should Be 45-60 Minutes.
Things parents should know about infants sleep is that they tend to wake up every 45-60 minutes but can be put back to sleep instantly again lasting up to 3 hours when they feel hungry.
They Have More Than Half Of Their Sleep As Rem Sleep.
They tend to spend more time in REM than N-REM that’s why they sleep light and wake up easily.
They Are Hungry Frequently.
They can only take a feed that lasts up till 3 hours maximum thus, their shorter sleep duration.

With Time Their Sleep Regularizes.
They tend to achieve the day and night cycle after a few months or a year of birth, hence, regularizing their sleep.
Catch Those Signs Of Sleepiness.
Whenever you baby feels the first stage of sleep of drowsiness or droopy eyes put him to sleep, he needs it.

Avoid smoking, loud music or TV around sleeping time, it might distract or disturb them.
