Police Commemoration Day 2026: Know The History, Significance And Programmes Planned Across India This Year

Every day, police personnel take on responsibilities that can put their lives at risk, from responding to emergencies to protecting public safety. Police Commemoration Day, observed on October 21 every year, honours those who lost their lives in the line of duty and recognises the sacrifices made by police forces across India.

The date traces back to a tragic incident in 1959 that led to the establishment of this annual observance. Here's a look at its history, significance and the programmes planned across India on Police Commemoration Day 2026.

Police Commemoration Day 2026: Date And Significance

Police Commemoration Day falls on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. It honours police personnel who have died while performing their duties, particularly the 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel killed in an ambush at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959.

The day recognises the courage and commitment of police personnel who work to maintain law and order, protect citizens and respond to security threats. It also honours the families who have lost loved ones in the service of the nation.

Why Is Police Commemoration Day Observed On October 21?

On October 21, 1959, Chinese troops ambushed a patrol at Hot Springs in Ladakh. The patrol was searching for a missing reconnaissance party when the attack took place, killing 10 CRPF personnel.

Their sacrifice became the reason for observing October 21 as Police Commemoration Day. In January 1960, a conference of Inspectors General of Police from states and Union Territories decided that the date would be observed in police lines across India to honour the fallen personnel.

The observance has since developed into a nationwide tribute to police personnel who have died in the line of duty.

How Will India Observe Police Commemoration Day 2026?

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, several programmes are planned to honour police martyrs on October 21 and throughout the following days. These include:

  • National Tribute In New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to pay homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, followed by a joint parade of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police.
  • Nationwide Motorcycle Rally: Around 90 police riders representing specified states and Union Territories, central armed police forces and central police organisations will participate in the rally themed "Fight Against Drugs". Riders from across India are expected to reach Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, for the Ekta Parade on October 31, 2026.
  • Tributes By Senior Officials: The programme includes wreath-laying ceremonies by senior officials, dignitaries and representatives of police organisations.
  • Commemorative Events From October 22 To 30: Planned activities include visits by martyrs' families, police band displays, motorcycle rallies, Run for Martyrs events, blood donation camps, essay and painting competitions for children, and video screenings highlighting police service and sacrifice.
  • Nationwide Observances: Police forces across the country are also expected to organise commemorative programmes during this period.

The main ceremony is scheduled to be telecast on Doordarshan, webcast on police websites and covered by All India Radio and other media.

National Police Memorial: A Place Of Remembrance

The National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 21, 2018. It honours police personnel who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

The memorial features a 30-foot-high granite sculpture, a Wall of Valour bearing the names of police martyrs since Independence, and a museum documenting the history of policing in India.

Police Commemoration Day 2026 is an opportunity to recognise the people behind the uniform and remember the risks involved in protecting communities. As India pays tribute to its fallen personnel, the day also acknowledges the families who carry the loss of those who dedicated their lives to public service.
