Veteran Bengali actress Mithu Mukherjee, one of the recognisable faces of Bengali cinema in the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 71. She passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai on Sunday night, September 20, after reportedly battling cancer for nearly a year. Mukherjee had been living in Mumbai for several years and had largely stayed away from the public eye in her later life. News of her death has prompted tributes from the Bengali film fraternity, including actor Prosenjit Chatterjee.

Who Was Mithu Mukherjee?

Born in Kolkata in 1955, Mithu Mukherjee entered films at just 17. She made her screen debut with Chitta Bose's 'Shesh Parba', with sources variously dating the debut to 1971 or 1972. Her breakthrough came with Dinen Gupta's 'Marjina Abdulla', in which she played the titular character opposite Debraj Roy. The film brought her widespread recognition and established her as a leading presence in Bengali cinema.

She went on to appear in several popular Bengali films, including 'Nishikanya', 'Mouchak', 'Swayamsiddha', 'Kabi', 'Hotel Snow Fox', 'Pratima', 'Bhagyachakra', 'Sandhi' and 'Ashrita'. During her career, she worked alongside some of the biggest names of Bengali cinema, including Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Ranjit Mullick.

From Bengali Cinema To Hindi Films

Mukherjee also ventured into Hindi cinema at a time when actresses from regional industries were increasingly crossing linguistic boundaries. She made her Hindi-film debut with Dulal Guha's 'Khaan Dost' in 1976. She subsequently appeared in films such as Basu Chatterjee's 'Safed Jhoot', 'Dillagi' and 'Do Ladke Dono Kadke'. Her career therefore extended beyond Bengali cinema, although she remained particularly associated with the Bengali screen.

A Career That Ended Away From The Spotlight

After a period away from films, Mukherjee returned to the screen with Chandra Barot's 'Ashrita' in 1990, which became her final film. She subsequently chose a quieter life away from the entertainment industry and rarely appeared in public.

According to reports, she had sold her home in South Kolkata and moved to Mumbai to live with her elder sister. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer in Mumbai for around a year before she died at Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday night, September 20, at the age of 71.
