Robotic Dogs A Review
When thinking about a dog, the first image that comes to your mind is, for sure, that of an animal with long and soft fur and cute looks. But living in the post modern era of revolutionary inventions, the centuries old images and concepts have already been out dated and today we have, instead of the barking and biting pets, the all new robot dogs that will perform exactly like a pet dog or better. Here reviewed are few of the most popular electronic dogs made with the help of modern softwares and electronics.
Tekno - the robot dog
With a fiber built body, Tekno looks more like a toy than a cute puppy. But he is a walking, barking, talking and crying robot friend shaped as a puppy. With just a few barks, whines and pants he will let you know how he is feeling. He can even be trained to perform tricks. He is programmed to respond like an 8 week old puppy. Tekno sees and hears everything around him and knows when it is getting dark. It is amazing to know that at night Tekno sleeps and snores and his biological clock wakes him automatically in the morning. He speaks several English words including: 'Tekno', 'whoops', 'excuse me' and 'thanks'.
Tekno has emotions and gets smarter as he ages. He does not require a headset. Touch sensors are used to train him. His voice and light sensors give him additional functions. He even sings and plays card tricks. He sleeps standing still, because he cannot sit or lay down. Tekno responds to light levels and sounds, but not to words or individual voices. Tekno has no headset or remote. You can launch behaviors by pressing sensors on his head, neck, nose and one side. He can be programmed to be an alarm clock.
Me and My Shadow
Unlike Tekno, Me and My Shadow comes with a soft fur and looks exactly like a puppy. Me and My Shadow is one of the first 'soft' robot dogs. Most other units are more mechanical in look and feel. Me and My Shadow is a product from MGA Entertainment company. This electronic puppy can learns your voice and responds to your commands. You can name him, he learns his name and obeys commands like come, sit, speak, stay, get up, drop it etc... He can bark, pant, sniff, play and growl just like a real puppy. He comes with a travel carrier, voice recognition headset, clip-on controller and a doggie bone
He sits down and goes to sleep in 1 1/2 minutes after the last command. To wake him up, say his name or press the mode button on the headset. He will stand, bark and await your command. Me and My Shadow is operated with four C batteries and a 9 volt battery in the headset. Communication is accomplished using infrared transmitting LEDs in the headset and placing IR sensors behind his eyes. Me and My Shadow's steering mechanism is based on the Ackerman steering which is very similar to rack-and-pinion automotive steering. "The system consists of four-bar linkages for each leg and a universal joint for the front legs, which not only lets the legs rotate, but also move forward for walking.
