New LPG Rules From May 1, 2026: OTP Delivery, Price Changes And Booking Limits You Must Know
For many households, LPG is not something that invites much attention until the cylinder runs out. The process has stayed familiar for years-book, wait, receive. From May 1, 2026, that routine sees a few important updates. They are not disruptive, but they do change how the system works at a practical level. Here's a clear look at what's coming into effect and how it may influence everyday use.
OTP Will Now Decide Your Delivery
The biggest shift is the mandatory Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system.
Once you book a cylinder, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. When the delivery person arrives, you'll need to share that code. No code, no cylinder.
This isn't just a technical upgrade-it's meant to fix long-standing issues like duplicate deliveries, fake bookings, and diversion of cylinders. For users, the takeaway is simple: If your mobile number isn't updated, you could face delays right at your doorstep.
Monthly Price Revisions Continue-And May Could See a Change
LPG prices are reviewed at the start of every month, so May 1 naturally becomes a checkpoint.
Given the recent global supply pressures, there's a strong possibility of a price adjustment. That said, it's not guaranteed-prices depend on multiple factors, including international fuel rates.
What this means in practical terms: Don't be surprised if the cost shifts slightly. It's part of an ongoing pattern rather than a one-time change.
eKYC May Become Hard To Ignore
There's a stronger push toward Aadhaar-linked eKYC for LPG connections.
While this hasn't been enforced uniformly everywhere yet, the direction is clear. Incomplete KYC could eventually lead to service interruptions or delays in booking and delivery.
If your connection details haven't been updated in a while, this is a good time to check. It's one of those small tasks that can prevent bigger inconveniences later.
Booking Too Soon? That Might Not Work Anymore
There has always been a minimum gap between bookings-roughly 25 days in urban areas and longer in rural regions.
Now, authorities are looking at stricter enforcement of these gaps. This isn't about limiting usage but preventing misuse and hoarding. For regular households, it simply means planning refills a little more carefully instead of booking "just in case."
OTP-Based Delivery Is Now the Standard Everywhere
The OTP system isn't entirely new-it's been tested in phases across cities.
From May 2026, it becomes standard nationwide practice. That means no exceptions, no old methods, and no manual overrides. So even if your area didn't follow this earlier, it will now.
PNG Could Slowly Replace LPG in Some Areas
In cities where piped natural gas (PNG) is available, there's a gradual shift happening.
Households with access to PNG may eventually be encouraged or required to transition away from LPG. In some cases, LPG connections could be discontinued after notice.
This doesn't affect everyone right now, but it signals where things are heading, especially in urban zones.
Supply Priority Still Favors Homes
One thing that isn't changing is supply priority.
Domestic users and essential services continue to get preference over commercial demand. During supply pressure, this ensures households aren't left waiting.
What This Means in Everyday Life
None of these changes are complicated on their own. But together, they do change how casually LPG usage has been handled so far.
- You can't ignore OTPs anymore
- You'll need updated contact and KYC details
- Booking habits may need a slight adjustment
- And prices may continue to fluctuate
It's less about disruption and more about tightening the system.
The new LPG rules don't overhaul the system-they refine it. The process becomes more structured, more digital, and less open to manual workarounds.
For most households, the adjustment should be straightforward. Keeping your details updated and staying aware of the new steps will be enough to avoid inconvenience. The routine remains the same at its core-it just requires a little more attention now.
