Nagasaki Day 2026: Is Nagasaki Still Radioactive 81 Years Later?
At 11:02 am on 9 August 1945, the American atomic bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" detonated 500 metres above Nagasaki, engulfing about a square mile of the city and killing an estimated 40,000 to 75,000 people almost instantly. This Sunday, as Nagasaki marks the 81st anniversary of the bombing with its annual Peace Memorial Ceremony near the hypocenter, one question resurfaces every year: is Nagasaki still radioactive?
The short answer, backed by decades of scientific monitoring, is no. But the reason why reveals something most people misunderstand about what radiation actually does after a nuclear explosion.
Where Did All That Radiation Go?
A nuclear blast releases radiation in two waves. The first - initial radiation - is the burst of gamma rays and neutrons at the moment of detonation. It is lethal, but it is over in seconds. The second is residual radiation, which lingers as fallout and irradiated material.
In Nagasaki's case, the residual threat collapsed faster than most people imagine. According to the city of Hiroshima's local government website, research indicates that 80 per cent of residual radiation was emitted within 24 hours of the bombing. Within one week, residual radiation had fallen to roughly one-millionth of the level present immediately after the blast.
The chemistry explains the speed. The vast majority of isotopes produced during fission, such as Iodine-131, have half-lives measured in hours or days - meaning their radioactivity disappears very quickly.
The Detonation Height That Changed Everything
One detail spared Nagasaki decades of contamination: Fat Man never touched the ground.
Had the bomb been a ground burst, dirt and rocks would have been sucked into the fireball and made radioactive by neutrons, making the fallout far worse. Because it was an air burst, this did not happen. Since the bombs were detonated so far above the ground, there was very little contamination, especially in contrast to nuclear test sites such as those in Nevada, and nearly all the induced radioactivity decayed within a few days of the explosions.
The infamous "black rain" that fell after the blast was real, but direct measurements found the highest radiation levels in Nagasaki's Nishiyama district, and even there, levels should not have caused lasting harm.
Can You Safely Visit Nagasaki Today?
Yes - and roughly 400,000 people already live there. The radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki today is on a par with the extremely low levels of background radiation present anywhere on Earth, and has no effect on human bodies, the Hiroshima city government states.
The human legacy, however, has not decayed. More than 15,000 hibakusha - survivors of the Nagasaki bombing - are still alive today, and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall now registers over 2,01,000 victims, a number that continues to grow as survivors pass away and their names are added.
Bottomline
The radiation left Nagasaki within days. The memory never will. Eighty-one years on, the city is not a warning because of what lingers in its soil - it is a warning because of what happened in a single flash above it. That is what Nagasaki Day asks the world to remember.
