Dr. S Natarajan Receives Antia Oration Award

Dr F P Antia was born in Mumbai on August 10.1916, He obtained his B.Sc. degree in 1938, MBLS in 1941, MD in 1944 (Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai), MRCP (London) in 1946, and MS (Illinois, USA) in 1949. He was awarded the FRCP (London) in 1969 Armed with all these he returned to India to set up the first Gastroenterology department in the country in B Y L Nair charitable hospital.
Dr Antia was a founder-member of the International Association for Study of Liver (ISAL; 1958), Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology (1958), Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG; 1959), Indian Association for Study of the Liver (INASL; 1980), and Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI; 1980). He was also a member of the British Medical Association (1960), American Gastroenterological Association (1972), Association of Physicians of India (API; 1953), Nutrition Society of India (1966), Society of Nuclear Medicine (1967), and ICMR Expert Committee for Gastroenterology (1974). He was President of the ISG (1966), INASL (1980), and SGEI (1980), and Counselor for Asia, IASL (1958). He was responsible for the induction of well-qualified hepatologists from India as members of the IASL.
The Gastroenterology Department of By L Nair Hospital has instituted an ORATION AWARD in the name of Dr. F.P. Antia, through the IMA which is given to a prominent medical specialist with laudable contributions in that particular field. This year Dr. S Natarajan is the privileged one to get the award.
About Dr. S Natarajan
This third generation Ophthalmologist did his MBBS from Chennai. In 1982 he completed his post graduation in Ophthalmology from Chennai & was trained as a Vitreo Retinal Surgeon, under Dr. S. S. Badrinath, at the Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. In 1988 he joined the Taparia Institute of Ophthalmology, Bombay Hospital. He set up vitreo retinal department at Bombay Hospital & continued working there till 1990. In year 1990, he took the decisive step of laying the foundation stone of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital and has continued serving the institution in his capacity as Chairman & Managing Director, surgeon and guide to a large community of Vitreo Retinal Specialists. He was one of the founding members of the Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI) the umbrella organization for all the vitreo retinal specialists of the country.
He is considered as one of the most proficient and high profile young surgeons involved in academics & innovations in his clinical practice and he has been honored with accolades from around the world. He is a recipient of the American Academy achievement Award, Late Shri Sandeep Wagh Award, Gusi Peace Award, India Gandhi Sadbhavna Award, Lion"s Eye Specialist Award & many more.
S Natarajan believes in the maxim “If you rest, you will rust" & constantly strives to set new benchmarks beating his own records. He has more than 25000 complicated vitreoretinal surgeries to his credit. He holds the record for the 1st suture less vitrectomy in the Limca book of records. A man with a natural flair for leadership, he has served as the President Bombay Ophthalmic Association, President Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society & has trained more than 60 ophthalmologists to serve the community through his Leadership Development Program.
He has a deep sense of responsibility to the less fortunate in society
