GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are Finally Live — Here's Everything That's New This Time Around
At midnight on 25 June 2026, something happened that millions of gamers had been waiting over a decade for. Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders went live in the US, with listings springing up across PlayStation and Xbox storefronts as well as physical retailers. For many, it was the moment the game stopped feeling like a rumour and started feeling real.
Rockstar Games had officially confirmed pre-orders would begin on June 25 on digital storefronts and at select retailers. And after two delays, a leaked trailer, and years of fan speculation, the floodgates are now open. But beyond the pre-order hysteria, the bigger question is: what is actually new in GTA 6? Because if the confirmed features are anything to go by, quite a lot.
Two Editions, Two Price Points - and Some Controversy Already
Rockstar has unveiled two editions: a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition, with both including pre-order bonuses such as vehicles, a weapon pattern, outfits, and hairstyles.
The Standard Edition costs $79.99 / £69.99, while the Ultimate Edition - which features an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and additional content threaded across the story - comes in at $99.99 / £89.99.
The pre-order bonus for both digital and physical versions includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, which comes with a two-tone '55 Vapid Stanier sedan car, the Shore Court Garage on Ocean Beach, throwback outfits for both protagonists, and a weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders will also include a free month of GTA+.
Where it gets contentious is the Ultimate Edition's exclusives. It locks certain mod shops - including one specialising in off-road modifications and another for vehicle customisation featuring detailed interiors and premium styling - behind the premium paywall. Critics have noted this is the first time Rockstar has placed significant gameplay features behind an edition tier rather than making them available through in-game progression.
The First Female Lead in GTA History
Perhaps the most significant storytelling shift GTA 6 brings is its protagonist setup. The game features dual playable protagonists: Jason Duval, who has an ex-military background, and Lucia Caminos - the first female lead to headline a mainline GTA game.
Inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, the pair can be switched between in solo play or coordinated in dual control. Each character carries distinct mechanics: Jason has a slow-motion ability that targets enemy weak points, while Lucia can trigger a single-shot slow-motion mode.
GTA 6 continues the dual-character format but with deeper integration: Lucia and Jason share a connected storyline shaped by player decisions, with choices affecting relationships, missions, and outcomes. It is a more emotionally engaged storytelling model than anything the series has previously attempted.
The game's official synopsis sets the stakes clearly: when an easy score lands Jason and Lucia in a conspiracy stretching across the entire state of Leonida, the young criminal couple find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.
A World Twice the Size of GTA V
The confirmed map for GTA 6 is called Leonida - substantially larger than GTA 5's world. Modern Vice City sits at its centre, drawing from Miami's architecture and culture, surrounded by the Grassrivers area modelled on the Florida Everglades, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.
The world is estimated at nearly twice the size of GTA V, with over 700 enterable interiors, a number that signals a fundamental change in how the open world functions. In previous entries, most buildings were decorations. Here, they are destinations.
Next-Gen Only - and the Tech to Back It Up
GTA 6 is designed exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, skipping older console generations completely. This allows Rockstar to fully use high-end hardware capabilities such as faster loading, advanced physics, better lighting, and improved AI systems.
Confirmed technical features include ray-traced global illumination, strand-based hair physics, dynamic clothing, and growing facial hair. Combat has been reworked with prone crawling, zip ties, human shields, and a smarter six-star wanted system. The game also features over 200 vehicles - cars, motorcycles, helicopters, planes, and boats - all with fully interactive interiors.
Rockstar has confirmed the game will take advantage of the PS5's bespoke features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and the internal SSD.
The Release Date - and the Long Wait Behind It
GTA 6 is confirmed to release on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, after being delayed twice from its original 2025 target. No PC release date has been officially announced.
Industry expectations around its commercial potential are staggering. Private investment bank Piper Sandler has estimated that GTA 6 could launch with 45 million day-one sales, dwarfing GTA V's record of 11.21 million units on its first day in 2013.
